HBS - lymphatic & immune system

Vocab / Concept

Definition / Explanation

pathogen/antigen

a disease-causing organism

prions

(non-living proteins) infect through contamination, meds slow it down

viruses

(non-living) infect through contact, or bodily fluids. hosts cells are destroyed, vaccine builds acquired immunity

bacteria

(living) infect through orifice, wounds, contamination, contact. meds = antibiotics, hygiene & vaccinations

orifice

nose, eyes mouth

protists

(living) infects through contaminated feces, meds = antiprotozoal

fungi

(living) infects when spores of fungi inhaled or land on host. meds = antifungals

helminths

(living worms) contamination or through infected insect. meds = deworming

mucus

this traps the pathogens in our body and is either swallowed to be killed through stomach acid or blew out the orifices

epidermis

top layer of skin - provides barrier - makes new skin - provides color

dermis

middle layer - contains collagen - makes oil/sweat - contains blood vessels/nerve endings

subcutaneous fatty tissue

bottom layer of skin - fat/cushion - bones - helps regulate body temp

sepsis

the body’s immune system overreacts to an infection causing inflammation

severe sepsis

organs in the body begin to malfunction, blood pressure is low, and inflammation continues

septic shock

extremely low blood pressure that does not respond to IV fluids

lymph nodes

small lumps of tissues that contain wbc's to fight infections

lymph

fluid in the body made mainly from wbc's

lymphatic system

maintains fluids, absorbs fats, protects from pathogens, transports/removes waste from fluid

immune system

use organs from other body systems to protect body, anything this system doesn't recognize; it fights it

platelets

aid in blood clotting

red blood cells

hemoglobin rich, transport oxygen through body

white blood cells

active in immune response, lymphocytes, monocytes, etc

innate immunity

any defense mechanisms that you are born with

acquired immunity

defense mechanisms that are acquired throughout life

b-cells

matures in bone marrow - produces antibodies

antibodies

produced by b-cells to impair pathogens

prodromal

early signs of symptoms

convalesce

gradual recovery after health had decreased

t-cells

type of wbc that recognizes and attacks pathogens

virus attacking host cell

AEURAMR - assembly, entry, unleash, replicate, assembly, maturation, release
