Osmosis - Core Practical

Equipment:

  • Sucrose solutions

  • Cork borer

  • Beaker

  • Measuring cylinder

  • Potatoes

  • Balance

  • Ruler

  • Scalpel

  1. Prepare solutions increasing in sucrose concentration starting with pure water (using measuring cylinder)

  2. Cut potatoes into same sized cylinders using cork borer, scalpel, and ruler

  3. Dry potatoes

  4. Weigh potatoes with balance and record

  5. Put potatoes into the beakers holding the solutions

  6. Leave cylinders in solutions for at least 40 minutes (making sure they stay in for the same amount of time)

  7. Dry potatoes

  8. Weight potatoes with balance and record

  9. Work out percentage change for each result

Independent variable (change): sucrose solution concentration

Dependent variable (measure): potato cylinder weight

Control variable: (same): everything else e.g size of cylinders, amount of solution in each beaker etc.

Why do you work out the percentage change?

The potatoes will probably be different masses in the beginning so just looking at the results to see which is highest and which is lowest will not be accurate

Percentage change = change in mass x100

initial mass
