Types of Government Systems (DCUSH)

Democracy- Citizens participate in government directly or through representatives (people hold power)

  • example- united states   

  • (why it fits) Citizems vote in elections to choose leaders and influence laws


Direct Democracy- Citizens vote directly on laws/ issues

  • examples- ancient Athens

  • (why it fits) male citizens voted directly on major decisions instead of electing representatives


Representative Democracy - citizens elect leaders to vote on their behalf

  • examples- United States

  • (Why it fits) people elect representatives in congress and other offices to make laws for them


Republic- A government where citizens elect representatives and laws apply equally

*A republic is a type of representative democracy that emphasizes the rule of law and constitutional limits

  • (why it fits) the country is governed by elected officials under a written consitiution


Monarchy- Rule by King or Queen

  • examples- United Kingdom (UK)

  • (why it fits) the Uk’s current king is King Chalres 3


Absolute Monarchy- Monarchs have nearly total power

  • examples- Louis XIV’s France

  • (why it fits) Louis XIV centralized power and famously claimed “I am the state”


Dictatorship- One ruler holds complete power

  • Example- Hitler’s Germany

  • (why it fits) Adolf Hitler controlled the government and elimanted political opposition


Totalitarianism- Governmet controls nearly every aspect of life (total control)

  • Example- Stalin’s USSR

  • (why it fits) Stalin’s government controlled the economy,media, education, and political life


Theocracy- Religious leaders rule the government; the government is run by religious law

  • example- Iran

  • (why it fits) religious leaders hold major political authority and laws are influenced by religion


Oligarchy- Small group holds power

  • example- Russia

  • (why it fits) Modern Russia is often considered an oligarchy because a small group of wealthy, politically connected elites hold significant control over government and economy


Communism- The government controls the economy/ property, aiming for classless society

  • examples- Soviet Union

  • (why it fits) The government owned major industries and controlled economic production


Socialism- The government provides or controls key services/ industies

  • examples-Sweden (modern mixed model)

  • (why it fits) The government provides extensive social welfare programs funded through taxes


Federal System- Power is divided between the national and state government

  • examples- United States

  • (why it fits) State governements and the federal government share powers


Unitary system- The Central government holds most power

  • examples- Frace

  • (why it fits) The national government has greater authority than local governments


Confederation- States/ regions hold most power

  • example- Articles of Confederation

  • (why it fits) The national government had very limited power while states held most authority


Mixed Economy- a combination of private business and government regulation/services; government provides some goods and saftey nets while business operates in markets

  • example- united states

  • (why it fits) The U.S has private companies (like Amazon and Tesla) operating in a market economy, but the governemnt regulates business, collects taxes, and provides programs like social security, public schools, highways, and medicare
