Opiates
Examples of Opiates: OxyContin, Methadone, Heroin
Main effects on the body: Accompanied by drowsiness and a sense of well-being that generally last for three to four hours.
Hallucinogens
Examples of Hallucinogens: Marijuana, LSD, mescaline, PCP, psilocybin, and MDMA (Ecstasy).
Main effects on the body: Causes marked changes in normal thought processes, perceptions, and moods.
Depressants
Examples of Depressants: Alcohol, Barbiturates and Tranquilizers.
Main effects on the body: Depressants calm irritability and anxiety and may induce sleep.
Stimulants
Examples of Stimulants: Amphetamine, Cocaine and methamphetamine
Main effects on the body: are an intense feeling of pleasure, followed by a period of exhaustion and a prolonged period of depression. There’s also increased alertness and vigour.
Club Drugs
Examples of Club Drugs: MDMA (ecstasy), Ketamine and Rohypnol
Main effects on the body: Ecstasy enhances self-awareness and decreases inhibitions; however, seizures, muscle breakdown, stroke, kidney failure, and cardiovascular system failure often accompany chronic abuse.
Ketamine can also cause impaired motor functions, high blood pressure, amnesia, and mild respiratory depression.
Steroid
Examples of Steroid: Anadrol and Durabolin
Main effects on the body: are extreme muscle growth, unpredictable effects on mood and personality, depression, diminished sex drive, halting bone growth, and liver cancer.
Colour Screening tests
The most common spot/colour test for marijuana is the Duquenois-Levine test, Purple colour = + result
LSD – Erlich/Van UrkTest, blue violet
Amphetamines – Marquis test, red-orange → brown
Cocaine – Cobalt thiocyanates test, blue flakey precipitate
Heroin – Marquis test, purple
Barbiturates – Dille-Kopanyi test, violet
Presumptive vs. Confirmatory test? Examples?
Presumptive Test:
Presumptive tests are less precise and indicate that an illegal substance may be present.
Confirmatory Test:
Confirmatory tests provide a positive identification of the substance in question.
