Neural Tissues

Anatomical Terminology.

  • Dorsal - Up

  • Ventral - Down

  • Rostral - Front

  • Caudal - Back

Neuronal Doctrine.

  • The concept that the nervous system is made up of discrete, individual cells which are mutually dependent upon one another.

Reticular Theory.

  • An outdated theory, once popular, claimed that the entire nervous system forms a single continuous network.

Brodmann Areas of the Cortex.

  • Regions of the cortex are numbered 1-52.

  • Boundaries determined by histological architecture and each area has a particular set of inputs and outputs.

  • Has a distinct function. Eg:

    • Brodmann Areas 17 - Primary Visual Cortex

    • Brodmann Area 4 -Primary Motor Cortex

Neuron Types and Function.

  • Neurons:

    • Basic cellular units of the CNS.

    • Receive and integrate incoming information from sensory receptors/ other neurons.

    • Neurons chemically transmit information to other neurons or effector organs.

    • Each neuron is a separate entity with a limiting cell membrane.
