Untitled Flashcards Set

There are “four” forces of erosion:

  1.  gravity

  2.  wind

  3.  water

  4.  glaciers

Geologist classify surface process of change into three patterns:

  1. Weathering = the breakdown of rock into smaller pieces.

  2. erosion =  the break down and then “removal” of material to other places

  3. Deposition = the breakdown of material such as sediments.

What are the four forces of mechanical Weathering:

  1. Changing pressure in the rock

  2. Changing Weather

  3. Moving water

  4. abrasion, such as plant roots and animals.

What is an example of chemical Weathering?

:_rust formation on iron

The Environmental conditions, the Composition of materials, the surface are and size all do what relation to Weathering?

: direct relationship

What is “mass wasting” ?

: the movement of rock and soil down

What are four types of mass wasting (mass movements)

  1.  creep

  2.  slop

  3.  slides

What is the cross-sectional profile of soil layers called?

: horizontal

What is the Angle of Repose?

: steepest angle

What does the term “talus” describe?

: loose rock at the bottom of the cliff

The “area of Land” where surface water flow from

A higher area of elevation to a single are of lower

elevation, river, lake, or ocean is called a?

: drainage barrier

What is a Delta?

: fast moving water that drops on sediment

Why do Caves form?

; water dissolves rocks like limestone

What is the “largest” cave in the world?

: mammoth (it’s in Kentucky)

What is the “unique” geological formation called.. (the term)  that allows cave formations in the SE part of Minnesota?

:karst

What type of “current” caused the sand on a beach to migrate and move down the beach?

:_long slope

What are the two types of Glaciers?

  1. valley

  2. continental

What caused a “glacier” to form?

: snow composed are millions of years

What are three types of  erosional deposition features created by continental glaciers?

  1.  kettle

  2.   morrain

  3.   drumlin

What is “till”?

:locks left behind by glaciers

What are glacial erratics?

:rocks randomly left behind by glaciers

What were the Four major glacial advances through Minnesota during the last ice age?

1 Wisconsin

  2 kansas

3 Illinois

4 nebraska

What was the name of the large glacial lake that formed from Big Stone Minnesota into Canada after the last ice sheet melted back into Canada?

:_lake asaessy

How much (%) of the world is covered by Ice now?

: 10%

What is the name of the river that drained the large lake North of Bigstone, described above? That carved the MN river valley now?

: warren
