Paint & Cleanup

  1. Correct way to handle paintbrushes after use in the paint shop:
    Clean thoroughly with the appropriate solvent (water for latex, thinner for oil-based), reshape bristles, and store bristle-side up or hanging.

  2. When do we start cleaning up if painting?
    At least 15–20 minutes before the end of class to ensure proper cleanup and safe storage.

  3. When do we start cleaning up if building?
    Around 10–15 minutes before the end of class, depending on the size of the project and materials involved.

  4. Recommended procedure for disposing of sawdust in the wood shop:
    Use a dustpan or vacuum to collect sawdust and dispose of it in the designated sawdust bin, not regular trash, due to fire hazards.

  5. Where do we deposit trash during a scene shop trash run?
    In the designated dumpster or waste area outside the shop as directed by the instructor.


Health, Safety & PPE

  1. What do you need to do in class if you think you need to see the nurse?
    Notify the teacher immediately and get a pass before leaving.

  2. How frequently should we be picking up the area we are working in?
    Continuously as you work, and again during final cleanup. Maintain a clean workspace at all times.

  3. If I spill paint, how can I clean it up?
    Inform the teacher, contain the spill, then use rags or absorbent material. Dispose of materials in a safe, approved manner.

  4. Why keep aisles, emergency exits, and safety equipment areas clear?
    To ensure safe, fast evacuation and unobstructed access to emergency equipment.

  5. Which PRIDE value is tied to a clean working environment?
    Respect – for your space, tools, and others who share the space.

  6. Best practice for handling tools after use in theatrical shops:
    Clean, inspect, return tools to their designated storage area.

  7. What to do if you notice a broken tool or equipment?
    Stop using it immediately and report it to the teacher or supervisor.

  8. Why keep aisles/exits/safety zones clear (again)?
    Same as #9 – to maintain safety and accessibility during emergencies.

  9. What does a yellow-painted section of floor indicate?
    A caution area – usually signaling restricted zones, safety hazards, or areas to keep clear.

  10. Why use dust collectors on wood machinery?
    To reduce airborne particles, prevent fire hazards, and maintain clean air quality.

  11. Appropriate dress code for class in the scene shop:
    Closed-toe shoes, no loose or baggy clothing, hair tied back, and no dangling jewelry.


Emergency & Supervision

  1. Who can call 911 for life-threatening emergencies?
    Anyone – if it's clearly life-threatening and immediate help is needed.

  2. Where can you use spray paint/airborne chemicals?
    Only in a well-ventilated spray booth or designated outdoor area, never indoors without proper ventilation.

  3. Shoes not allowed in the scene shop:
    Open-toed shoes, sandals, flip-flops, or heels.

  4. Closest bathrooms to the Black Box?
    Outside, just across from the theatre


PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

  1. What does PPE stand for?
    Personal Protective Equipment

  2. Recommended PPE in the scene shop:
    Safety glasses, gloves, ear protection, dust masks/respirators, closed-toe shoes.

  3. Available PPE to borrow at PHS Scene Shop:
    Safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, dust masks.

  4. Are glasses considered eye protection?
    No – prescription glasses aren’t rated for impact. Wear safety goggles over them.

  5. Activities needing hearing protection:
    Using power tools, saws, nail guns, or working in loud environments.

  6. Are headphones considered hearing protection?
    No – they don’t provide proper protection and can be a distraction.

  7. Where can you find first aid kits at PHS?
    Near the whiteboard, or at the office.

  8. What to do if you use something from the first aid kit?
    Notify the teacher so it can be restocked.

  9. Why wear gloves?
    To protect skin from chemicals, splinters, abrasions, and heat.

  10. What kind of gloves do we wear when painting?
    Nitrile or latex gloves to prevent paint and chemical contact with skin.

  11. PPE not available in the PHS Scene Shop:
    Heavy Duty equipment like steel-toed boots, heavy duty masks or gloves, and other heavy duty equipment like full-body suits

  12. How do clothes act as PPE?
    They cover skin, absorb minor splashes, and protect against abrasions or sparks.

  13. Loose hair, baggy clothing, dangling jewelry:
    Tie back, secure, or remove – these can get caught in machines or tools.

  14. Where can I eat on campus? (Trick question!)
    Not in the scene shop or theater areas! Only eat in designated lunch areas.

  15. Should I work if I’m not feeling well?
    No. Stay home if sick – especially if symptoms include fever, dizziness, or nausea. Safety comes first.

  16. What does a locked exterior door of the Performing Arts Center mean?
    No one is allowed in or building is secured – wait for supervision or permission.

  17. First priority when working in the scene shop?
    Safety – yours and others’.

  18. How to protect your body when moving heavy equipment:
    Push it with your legs, not your back, get help, and use carts or dollies.

  19. What to do after initial cleanup if there’s time left?
    Help with shared tasks, organize tools, sweep, or ask the teacher what’s needed.

  20. When are you able to work on your own in the building?
    Only with direct teacher approval and supervision, and never alone.

  21. What should you do if uncomfortable or unsure of a task?
    Speak up – ask for clarification or a different task. Your safety and comfort matter.
