Untitled Flashcards Set

  1. device to learn about the following types of energy production.

Where is this type of energy source located? (i.e. on  a lake)

Positives

Negatives

Hydroelectric Energy

where there is lots of fast moving water like rivers. Usually where there are mountainous or hilly landscapes.

  • it renewable

  • its a reliable resource (constant flow of energy)

  • low emissions/small carbon footprint

  • generally cost effective

  • can be used for other things as well (crop irrigation etc)

  • dams and hydroelectric industries can have serious disturbances on the surrounding ecosystem (fish migration)

  • methane emissions from reservoirs

  • impact natural flow of river

Nuclear Energy

It is located near cities that need lots of energy, such as Ontario.

-Small land footprint

-Very high outputs of electricity

-Non renewable

-Not completely sustainable (have to mine radio active material)

-Hard to discard nuclear waste.

Solar Energy

It is located where there is lots of sun for large chunks of the day. Ex. field, prairie, etc.

  • Renewable

  • can be used everywhere in the world

  • reliable

  • Takes a lot to build solar panels

  • can’t really fix solar panels if they break

  • large land footprint

Wind Energy

There is wind energy located on shore and off shore. onshore wind farms located in open fields and tops of hills

-renewable

-zero emission

-very expensive to put up

-can make loud nouses affecting people and animals

-Lots of noise pollution

-No way to discard of wind turbines

-Distroying bird population

Hibernia (oil field)

It is located off of the coast of St. John, Newfoundland.

-Leads to energy independence

-Cheep energy

-Provided lots of jobs

-Damaging to the environment

-Non-renewable

-Oil spills

Oil Sands

Located in open land in Alberta (prairies).

  • easy to get

  • gives lots of energy

  • non-renewable

  • bad for the environment
