Quiz 5 – Chapter 5, 6, + Pg 255-257

Base Light: the overall illumination of the image

Creative Light: lighting in a way that enhances mood and style, revealing shape/texture

Incident Light: light that comes directly from a source like the sun or a bulb

Reflected Light: light that has bounced off a material surface onto the image

Contrast Ratio: human eye = 100:1 vs. video camera = 30:1

All lights involved in a shot must have the same color temperature!!!

Spots: focused beam, bright, intense, adjustable (common)

Floods: softer, more diffuse beam, sometimes adjustable

                  Broadlight: box-shaped light used in field or studio

Light Diffusion Devices: softens light and shadows, bounces light off surfaces

Barn Doors: controls direction of light, fits onto lighting unit

3-POINT LIGHTING: Key Light + Fill Light + Backlight

                  Key Light: focused, tight beam (Vertical Angle = 45, Horizontal Angle = 30-45)

                  Fill Light: soft, diffused, lower intensity (placed opposite Key)

                  Backlight: separates subject from background, highlights edges

Background Lighting: lights the background of a shot

Inverse Square Law: same for sound and lighting

Audio is considered the element of video production that provides 80% of the information.

Hertz = cycles per second

Main Frequency: Fundamental

Secondary Frequency: Overtones or Harmonics

Amplitude: volume of the sound (measured in decibels)

DAW: Digital Audio Workstation (editing and altering sound units)

Three-to-One Rule: for every foot a talent is away from a mic, that mic should be at least three feet away from another mic (prevents phasing)

Balanced cables have a ground; unbalanced cables do not.

Different Types of Microphone Pickups:

-         Cardioid

-         Hypercardioid

-         Bi-Directional

-         Omni-Directional

XLR = Ground, Left, Right cords in an XLR cable

SM-58 = best microphone for decades

PZM = Pressure Zone Mic
