Introduction to Psychology and Scientific Inquiry

Psychology originates from two Ancient Greek words: psyche (meaning "mind") and logos (meaning "knowledge" or "study").
In modern practice, psychology operates as both an academic study and a formal profession designed to solve practical problems across every field.
Scientific Definition of Psychology:
Psychology is formally defined as the scientific study of behavior (overt, physical actions such as running) and mental processes (covert, internal cognitive operations).
It relies strictly on objective research methods, scientific observation, and empirical evidence to answer specific questions.
Introspection and the Cognitive Unconscious:
Introspection is defined as the personal observation of one's own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
While an individual is the only person with direct access to their own mind, describing inner thoughts, feelings, sensations, and motives accurately is inherently difficult and often inaccurate.
This inaccuracy occurs because a vast majority of human mental processing takes place within the cognitive unconscious, rendering it inaccessible to direct personal observation.
Pseudoscience, Critical Thinking, and Obstacles to Rational Thought
Pseudosciences and Empirical Testing:
Pseudosciences ("fake sciences") make claims that lack scientific observation and empirical evidence. Examples include palm reading, healing crystals, and astrology.
Astrology Research and Findings:
Ancient Babylonians created astrology thousands of years ago. Although the Earth's axis has shifted the Zodiac by one full sign over time due to axial precession, astrologers ignore this shift.
Culver & Ianna (1988) evaluated astrological predictions, finding that only a tiny percentage were accurate, and those were written in extremely vague terms.
Gauquelin (1970) tested astrologers by asking them to match individuals to their corresponding horoscopes. Results showed no accuracy; astrologers were unable to distinguish the charts of convicted murderers from those of regular citizens.
Empirical studies demonstrate zero connection between astrological signs and intelligence, personality traits, psychological compatibility, leadership ability, marriage success, physical characteristics, or career choices (Hartmann, Reuter, & Nyborg, 2006; Martens & Trachet, 1998).
Societal Harms of Pseudoscience:
Wastes substantial time and financial resources.
Leads to human exploitation and manipulation.
Causes people to make critical life decisions based on unfounded claims, occasionally with dire consequences.

Principles of Critical Thinking:
Critical thinking is a form of systematic reflection that asks whether a belief can be supported by both scientific theory and observation.
Requires a "Scout Mindset" (an objective, curious pursuit of truth) rather than a "Soldier Mindset" (defending pre-existing beliefs).
Core Principles:
Few "truths" transcend the need for empirical testing. Critical thinkers actively apply falsification—the systematic attempt to demonstrate how a common belief, theory, or hypothesis might be false.
Authority does not automatically render an idea true; authority figures must present empirical proof.
Critical evaluation of evidence quality is mandatory.
Critical thinking necessitates maintaining an open mind.
Practical Questions for Critical Evaluation:
What is the specific claim being made, and does it make logical sense? Is there an alternative explanation?
Are there empirical tests of the claim? How strong is the evidence, and can it be falsified?
Who conducted the research, how trustworthy is the source, and have the findings been independently replicated?
Is there a rational, non-conspiracy explanation available?
Has the claim successfully endured peer review and scrutiny by subject experts?
How plausible is the claim or conspiracy as a practical matter?
Psychological Obstacles to Critical Thinking:
Uncritical Acceptance: The failure to evaluate claims using sufficient logic, combined with a tendency to accept statements as true for illogical reasons (e.g., because it feels good or is personally desirable).
Confirmation Bias: The tendency to notice, remember, and select evidence that confirms pre-existing expectations while ignoring, discounting, or actively avoiding evidence that contradicts those expectations.
Superstition: An unfounded belief maintained without objective supporting evidence, or held directly in the face of falsifying evidence.
Common Sense / Folk Wisdom Inconsistencies: Folk proverbs frequently contradict one another without empirical backing (e.g., "Out of sight, out of mind" versus "Absence makes the heart grow fonder"; "Opposites attract" versus "Birds of a feather flock together").
Barnum Effect: The psychological tendency to believe that general, vague descriptions of personality apply specifically and accurately to oneself (e.g., generic horoscopes).
Core Goals and Scientific Methods in Psychology

Describing Behavior: Addressing the question, "What is the nature of this behavior, and what does it look like?"

Childproof the living area thoroughly rather than restricting what the child can touch and explore.
