Bill of rights

  • 1st Amendment: Guarantees freedom of religion, speech, the press, assembly, and the right to petition the government. 

  • 2nd Amendment: Protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. 

  • 3rd Amendment: Prohibits the quartering of soldiers in private homes without the owner's consent. 

  • 4th Amendment: Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures, requiring warrants based on probable cause. 

  • 5th Amendment: Guarantees due process of law, protects against self-incrimination, double jeopardy, and ensures just compensation for property taken for public use. 

  • 6th Amendment: Guarantees the right to a speedy and public trial, the right to legal counsel, and the right to confront witnesses. 

  • 7th Amendment: Guarantees the right to a jury trial in civil cases. 

  • 8th Amendment: Prohibits excessive bail and cruel and unusual punishment. 

  • 9th Amendment: States that the enumeration of specific rights in the Constitution does not mean that other rights, not specifically listed, are not also protected. 

  • 10th Amendment: Reserves powers not delegated to the federal government to the states or the people
