Cranial Nerves

  • Olfactory Nerve Fibers (# 1): Function: Sensory fiber for smell 

  • Optic Nerve (#2): Function: Sensory fibers for vision 

  • Oculomotor Nerve (#3):Function: Voluntary motor fibers to eye muscle; autonomic fiber to ciliary body muscle & iris for pupil constriction 

  • Trochlear nerve(#4): Function: voluntary motor fibers to eye muscles 

  • Trigeminal Nerve (#5): Function: Sensory fibers from cornea, scalp, forehead, face, teeth; voluntary motor fibers for mastication 

  • Abducens(#6): Function: Voluntary motor fibers to eye muscles 

  • Facial Nerve (#7): Function: Voluntary motor fibers for facial expression; sensory fibers for taste (anterior 2/3 of tongue); autonomic fibers to salivary and lacrimal glands. 

  • Vestibulocochlear (#8): Function: Sensory fibers for hearing and equilibrium 

  • Glossopharyngeal Nerve (#9): Function: Sensory fibers for taste (posterior 1/3 of tongue) and general sensation; voluntary motor fibers to pharyngeal muscles; autonomic fibers to parotid salivatory gland. 

  • Vagus (#10): Function: Voluntary motor fibers to muscles in pharynx and larynx; autonomic fibers to thoracic and abdominal organs. 

  • Accessory Nerve (#11): Function: Voluntary motor fibers to muscle of larynx & and soft palate; Voluntary motor fibers to sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles. 

  • Hypoglossal Nerve (#12): Function: voluntary motor fibers to the tongue
