Brown v. Board of Education, Topeka, KS (1954)- ruled that segregating children in public schools based on race was unconstitutional, it overturned the "separate but equal" doctrine established in Plessy and effectively ended legal racial segregation in public education
Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)- Homer Plessy challenges segregation laws on public transportation and he loses, principle of "separate but equal" established and it legalizes segregation across the United States
Dred Scott v. Sanford (1857)- Scott (enslaved) challenged his enslaved status because he was taken to a free territory by his enslaver, court ruled African Americans were not citizens and could never be citizens and were therefore never entitled to freedom or suing in a court of law, also declares the MOCO unconstitutional "as it deprives people of their right to property"
Marbury v. Madison (1803)- establishes principle of judicial review
Worcester v. Georgia (1832)- about the constitutionality of the Indian Removal Act in 1832
Korematsu v. United States (1944)- allows for the continued internment of Japanese Americans
McCullough v. Maryland (1819)- implied powers and the supremacy clause, specifically related to the National Bank
Miranda v. Arizona (1966)- protected the rights of individuals against self-incrimination
Schenck v. United States (1919)- passage of the Espionage Act does not violate the First Amendment
Regents of University of California v. Bakke (1979)- affirms the right to affirmative action but banned the use of racial quotas
Roe v. Wade (1973) -right to privacy specifically as it relates to abortion
Loving v. Virginia (1967) -allows interracial marriage
