Depth Cues – Parts of an image that create impressions of three-dimensional volume through use of mise-en-scene, suggesting a space has both volume and several distinct planes. • Volume is suggested by shape, shading, and movement. • Planes are the layers of space occupied by persons or objects, described according to how close to or far away from the camera they ar. • Foreground, Middle Ground, and Background • Aerial Perspective is the hazing of more distant planes – soft focus in the background suggests distance. • Size Diminution – objects farther away are seen to get proportionally smaller, reinforcing our sense of a deep space with distance between planes. Scene Space Vocabulary • Linear Perspective - Strong impression of depth created when parallel lines converge at a distant vanishing point • Central Perspective – When the linear perspective extends from the geometrical center of the frame (when this is not the case, it’s called Off-center Linear Perspective) • Shallow-space Composition is when the mise-en-scene suggests comparatively little depth, with closest and most distant planes only slightly separated. • Deep-space Compositions suggest significant distance between planes (a la Citizen Kane) • Frontality = idea that viewer’s attention can be guided by having characters positioned in three-dimensions relative to the viewer (facing towards or away based on intent)
