Psychological arousal- physiological changes in your body (ex: sweaty palms or increase heart rate)
Expressive behaviors- actions and facial expressions
Conscious experience- feeling and interpretation of emotion (mental process of labeling)
Your brain uses past experiences to guide your actions and give your sensations meaning
James lang theory:
Our feelings follow a bodily reaction in external situations
(Ex: sad because you are crying)
Cannon bard theory:
Our reaction to emotions are general so we can not tell emotions from reactions alone
(Ex: fluttery stomach doesn’t necessarily mean a feeling of passion)
Although there are theories on emotions the classical view is:
Emotions are built from birth
Generated through neuronal pathways
Universally felt and recognized across cultures
Display rules: reaction towards a certain situation
Cultural display rules of emotion:
Emotion recognition is universal- everyone is able to recognize emotions from expressions
HOWEVER, recognition rates in countries vary- (ex: 95% of Americans associate smile with happiness, compared to only 69% from Sumatra)
