Week 7

Midterm is next week! Do the Study Guide!!!! It is open note/open book

BJ Years ppt

BJ Palmer like technology and reportedly owned the first Horseless Carriage west of the Mississippi River

  • He also introduced X-ray to Chiropractic in 1901

    • 2nd X-ray machine in the US

    • X-rays were taken up against the machine, while patient laid down and held their breath for 20-30 seconds

      • Standing X-rays weren’t taken until the 1930’s

  • First “EEG”

BJ invented new ways of adjusting

  • promoted way to hold hands while applying pressure (one hand on patient, other hand holding wrist

  • Promoted lines of drive

BJ heavily promoted the device called Neurocalometer (NCM) which was a 2-pronged unit that would indicate the area of subluxation based on spinal heat sensing

  • he wouldn’t sell it, instead he leased it to other people

  • Dossa Evins is the actual inventor of the NCM

  • 1st change to this machine was a hand-held unit called the Neurocalograph (NCGH) which would provide kymographic tracings

    • BJ INSISTED that every Chiro have one of these along with an X-ray machine.

      • Not everyone agreed to this

      • Some of the chiropractic leaders rejected this idea

      • This caused Palmer School of Chiropractic enrollment to drop from 3,000 to 300 in one year

      • Firth, Vedder and Burich all left PSC due to all this

        • They started Lincoln Chiropractic College together

Following this drop in enrollment, BJ and his wife left to travel the world

Dr Cleveland rejected the NCM but helped BJ start the Chiropractic Health Bureau (CHB)

  • Cleveland was still active in the NCA

They created the ACCA (Associated Chiropractic Colleges of America) in 1938

NCA adopted “Chiropractic Angel” as symbol in 1934

  • now there are a lot of variations of this angel

UCA became ICA in winter of 1940-1941

Stephenson’s Chiropractic Textbook had 33 principles

  • #1 = The Major Premise:

    • a universal intelligence is in all matter and continually gives to it all it properties and actions, thus maintaining it in existence

  • #2 = the chiropractic meaning of life

  • #5 = the perfection of the triune

  • #6 = The Principle of Time

    • There is No process that does not require time

  • #20 = Innate Intelligene

  • #22 = The Amount of Innate Intelligence

  • #31 = Subluxations

Safety-pin cycle:

  • easiest way of thinking how the nervous system works adapts to the internal and external environments with the body

  • Closed-loop system to continuously cycles through impulses

  • If the cycle is broken, it may proliferate involuntarily, and stop responding

The Universal Cycle:

  • innate intelligence to innate brain

  • Innate brain either goes to innate body or educated brain

  • The educated brain goes to educated body

  • This is a closed-loop system (every impulse goes both ways on its pathway)

1934 - BJ authored “The Subluxation Specific - The Adjustment Specific”

  • AA Wernsing, DC - credited with giving BJ the idea

  • The “Hole-In-One” Atlantoaxial joint

The New Technique (HIO) called for new technology

  • They began taking 3D images of the Cervical Spine

John J Nugent, DC

  • “Abraham Flexner of Chiropractic” by some

  • BJ called him the “anti-Christ of Chiropractic”

BJ started two clinics:

  • BJ Palmer Clinic

  • Clear view Clinic (overnight patient stays)

BJ was considered a celebrity, and even got to go one the campaign trail with Truman

BJ died May 1961 of Stomach Cancer

Subluxation has more than 100 synonyms

  • Dr Montgomery’s favorite is #81: Spinal Boo Boo
