Chapter 7 Cells

  • Prokaryote: Simple cell without a nucleus.

  • Eukaryote: Complex cell with a nucleus.

  • Nucleus: Cell control center with DNA.

  • Mitochondria: Makes energy for the cell.

  • Chloroplast: Does photosynthesis.

  • Ribosome: Makes proteins.

  • Rough ER: Protein-making transport system.

  • Smooth ER: Lipid-maker and detoxifier.

  • Golgi: Packages and ships materials.

  • Lysosome: Breaks down waste.

  • Vacuole: Storage space in the cell.

  • Cytoplasm: Jelly-like inside of the cell.

  • Membrane: Controls entry/exit of materials.

  • Cell Wall: Provides structure.

  • Bilayer: Double-layer fat in membranes.

  • Active: Transport using energy.

  • Passive: Transport needing no energy.

  • Diffusion: Molecules spread out.

  • Facilitated: Helped diffusion with proteins.

  • Hypertonic: Cell shrinks as water leaves.

  • Hypotonic: Cell swells as water enters.

  • Endocytosis: Cell takes in stuff.

  • Phagocytosis: Cell "eats" big solids.

  • Exocytosis: Cell pushes stuff out.
