  • Gustation

    • Taste = chemical sense

      • Sweet, sour, salty, bitter, & umami

  • Oleogustus   

    • Taste of fat

  • Smell (olfactory)

    • Olfactory System (smell) - chemical sense

  • Pheremones

    • Chemical signals that trigger a response in members of the same species

  • Kinesthesia

    • Sense the position of our body

    • Example: Feeling your arm move as you reach for a cup, or knowing how far you've turned a key. 

  • Vestibular sense

    • Monitor our body’s movement and balance using the fluid in our inner ear

      • Semicircular canals

      • Example: Feeling dizzy after spinning, or knowing you're upright when walking. 

  • Touch

    • Pressure, warmth, cold, & pain

  • Gate Control Theory

    • A “gate” in the spinal cord either opens or closes to permit pain signals traveling up to reach the pain

  • Phantom Limb Sensation

    • The feeling that an amputated limb is still present
