Cell Structure and Organelles

  • Bacterial Cell Organization:

    • Cytoplasm: Fluid component filling the cell where cellular activities take place.
    • Ribosomes: Structures responsible for protein synthesis.
    • Chromosome: Genetic material contained within the cytoplasm.
    • Cell Wall: Outer layer providing structural support and shape.
    • Cell Membrane: Inner boundary controlling movement into and out of the cell.
    • Plasmids: Defined as a circular piece of DNA.
  • Mitochondria Structure and Function:

    • Function: Site of aerobic respiration within the cell.
    • Cellular Distribution: Cells with a high energy requirement contain many mitochondria.
  • Plant and Animal Cell Structure:

    • Includes organelles such as typical chloroplasts and mitochondria.
    • Experimental relevance: Potato cells possess a partially permeable cell membrane, making potato cylinders or chips ideal for transport experiments.

Cell Membrane Structure and Selective Permeability

  • Membrane Composition:

    • Phospholipids: Arranged in a structural bilayer featuring phospholipid heads and tails.
    • Proteins: Embedded within the phospholipid membrane structure.
  • Concept of Selective Permeability:

    • The cell membrane is selectively permeable, meaning some molecules can pass through but not all.
  • Molecular Permeability Classification:

    • Molecules that CAN pass through the membrane:
    • Water
    • Glucose
    • Carbon dioxide
    • Oxygen
    • Molecules that CANNOT pass through the membrane:
    • Starch: Cannot pass through because it is too big to fit through membrane pores.

Cellular Transport Mechanisms

  • Diffusion:

    • Definition: Diffusion is the movement of molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration down their concentration gradient until they are evenly spread out.
    • Directionality:     High concentrationLow concentration\text{High concentration} \rightarrow \text{Low concentration}
    • Energy Requirement: It is a passive process and requires no energy.
  • Osmosis:

    • Definition: A special type of diffusion. Osmosis is the net movement of water molecules from an area of higher water concentration (HWC / dilute solution) to an area of lower water concentration (LWC / concentrated solution) across a partially permeable membrane down the water concentration gradient.
    • Terminology and Abbreviations:
    • HWC = Higher Water Concentration (corresponds to a dilute solution).
    • LWC = Lower Water Concentration (corresponds to a concentrated solution).
    • Energy Requirement: It is a passive process (no energy required).
  • Active Transport:

    • Definition: Active transport is the movement of molecules against the concentration gradient.
    • Energy Requirement: Requires energy provided by respiration.

Experimental Setups and Calculations

  • Model Cell Investigation with Visking Tubing:

    • Experimental Setup: Involves a boiling tube and visking tubing acting as a model cell.
    • Purpose: Used to demonstrate selective transport of substances such as starch and glucose.
  • Potato Cylinder Osmosis Investigation:

    • Cylinders or chips are cut from potatoes specifically because potato cells have a partially permeable cell membrane.
    • Procedure involves drawing diagrams to illustrate changes in plant cells when placed in solutions of varying concentrations.
