Central Idea: Heart Structures
The heart is a vital organ that pumps blood throughout the body, and it is composed of various interconnected structures that work together to ensure proper blood circulation.
Main Branches:
Chambers of the Heart
The heart consists of four chambers: the left atrium, right atrium, left ventricle, and right ventricle. Each chamber plays a crucial role in the cardiac cycle, allowing blood to flow efficiently through the heart.
Valves of the Heart
Valves within the heart, including the tricuspid valve, pulmonary valve, mitral valve, and aortic valve, ensure that blood flows in the correct direction and prevents backflow, maintaining the heart's effectiveness as a pump.
Blood Vessels
The heart is connected to various blood vessels that transport oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood to and from the heart. These vessels include the aorta, pulmonary artery, pulmonary veins, and vena cavae, facilitating the exchange of gases and nutrients throughout the body.
Conduction System
The heart's conduction system coordinates the heartbeat, regulating the heart's rhythm. Components such as the sinoatrial (SA) node, atrioventricular (AV) node, bundle of His, and Purkinje fibers work together to ensure that the heart contracts in a synchronized manner, allowing for efficient blood circulation.
Right Atrium
Receives deoxygenated blood from the body via the superior and inferior vena cava
Tricuspid Valve
Allows blood flow from the right atrium to the right ventricle
Right Ventricle
Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs through the pulmonary artery
Pulmonary Valve
Prevents backflow of blood into the right ventricle
Left Atrium
Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs through the pulmonary veins
Mitral Valve
Allows blood flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle
Left Ventricle
Pumps oxygenated blood to the body through the aorta
Aortic Valve
Prevents backflow of blood into the left ventricle
