Juxtaposition: placing two ideas, words, or images side by side so that their closeness creates an original, ironic, or insightful meaning.

Metaphor: a figure of speech involving an implied comparison.

Meter (rhythm): the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry.

Motif: a recurrent word, image, theme, object, or phrase that tends to unify a literary work or that may be elaborated into a theme.

Narrator: (persona/ point of view) the teller of the story.

BIFURCATED – Divided into two branches or parts.

BRUSQUE – Abrupt or blunt in manner or speech, often to the point of rudeness.

CALLOW – Inexperienced and immature, typically referring to a young person.

CATHARSIS – The process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions.

CAUCUS – A meeting of members of a political party or group to make decisions or select candidates.

CAVEAT – A warning or caution about certain conditions or limitations.

CELERITY – Swiftness or speed in movement or action.

CHAGRINED – Embarrassed or distressed as a result of failure or disappointment.

COMPLIANT – Willing to obey rules or agree to requests; submissive.

CONCEDE – To admit as true or valid, often reluctantly; to surrender or yield.

CONTRITE – Deeply remorseful or sorry for a wrongdoing.

CRASS – Lacking sensitivity, refinement, or intelligence; coarse or vulgar.
