MUSCLE

ORIGIN

INSERTION

ACTION

SUPRASPINATUS (above spinous scapula)

Supraspinous fossa scapula

Superior humerus (greater tubercle)

Abduction of arm

INFRASPINATUS (below spinous scapula)

Infraspinous fossa scapula

Superior lateral humerus (gr. Tubercle)

Lateral rotation of arm

TERES MINOR (Minor role in rotator cuff)

Scapula

Lateral humerus

Lateral rotation of arm

TERES MAJOR (has its own movements, not part of the rotator cuff)

scapula

Anterior lateral humerus

Extension and adduction of the arm

LATISSIMUS DORSI

Lats (gym workout), works down to the posterior pelvis, rowing muscle

Spines of vertebraeT7-L5 sacrum, ilium

Medial humerus

Extension and adduction of the arm

DELTOID

Shoulder muscle

Clavicle and scapula (spine)

Humerus (deltoid tuberosity)

Abduction, flexion, extension and medial and lateral rotation of arm

SUBSCAPULARIS (anterior muscle)

Anterior scapula

Proximal med humerus (lesser tubercle)

Rotates arm medially at shoulder joint

  • Rotator cuff muscles (SITS) that stabilize the shoulder joint are supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis (anterior).

Rotator Cuff Muscles - All 4 help reinforce the joint capsule

Muscles That Move the Verterbral Column – maintain erect spinal column and head. Also lateral flexion of the trunk

Mnemonic: I Like Standing

  • Illiocostalis (lateral) on ilium to ribs

  • Longissimus (intermediate) tranverse process and vertebrae ( all up to head and neck)

  • Spinalis (medial) midline and spinous processes

*Know muscle groups from lateral to midline
