lesson 1-

culture- knowledge, attitudes, and behavior patterns

  • Shared and transmitted by members of a society

subculture- part of dominant culture, but differs in some respects

  • gangs, artists, headbangers

  • in liberal societies, it’s pushed mainstream

subculture theory- conflicts in big cities between regulars and non-regulars lead to subcultures

a society exists when people interact and share culture

social norms- what defines appropriate and inappropriate behavior in your society

values- broad ideas about what is good/desirable shared by people in a society

etiquette- morals

  • morals- guidelines that should be followed by members of society

    • moral compass- in you naturally

  • taboo- a rule of behavior where the violation calls for a strong punishment

    • stealing (cut off the hand)

  • law- rule that is enforced by officials

  • folk culture- rural, close relationship with environment, very little social class/structure. songs, food, clothing, dances. moonshine, banjos, farm food

  • pop culture- constantly changing, popular in urban areas
