Basic Structures of a Plant Cell
Cytoplasm
the substance in a cell where all organelles are located
arranges organelles within cell
supports the shape of the cell
plays a role in protecting the cell from damage
uses storage spaces to store extra glucose produced during photosynthesis
Cell wall
- protects and maintains cells’ shape
- ensures that cell won’t burst when too much water is in it
Mitochondria
- energy center of the cell
- turns nutrients into ATP energy
Vacuoles
- responsible for intracellular digestion
- releases waste
- help with water balance
Cytoskeleton
- internal movement and structure of organelles
Genetic material
- DNA and RNA
- carries all the knowledge that makes the cell unique
Cilia/Flagella
- adapted to move cells throughout their environment
Ribosomes
- site of protein synthesis
Nucleus
- communicates with the whole cell
- is in charge of many processes that are necessary for the cell
Nucleolus
- responsible for producing ribosomes
- works hard to meet the needs of the cell
Golgi body
- packages macromolecules for transport
