Objectives

  • Objectives are vital for goal setting in nursing. Different models are used for writing objectives such as RUMBA and SMART.

RUMBA Model

  • Realistic: Ensure the objective is relevant to the situation and legible.

  • Unambiguous: The objective should be clear and professional.

  • Measurable: Define how the objective will be measured, including timeframes.

  • Behavioural: Clearly state the action and how it will be achieved.

  • Achievable: Make sure the objective can be accomplished based on the context.

SMART Model

  • Specific: Clearly describe the task and include an action verb.

  • Measurable: State how the objective’s achievement will be assessed.

  • Achievable: Ensure the objective is possible given the context and current role.

  • Realistic: Confirm the task is attainable for the stage of practice.

  • Timely: Include a realistic timeframe for completing the objective.

Bloom's Taxonomy

  • Provides verbs for writing objectives across various cognitive levels:

    • Remembering: Copying, Defining, Finding.

    • Understanding: Annotating, Articulating, Summarizing.

    • Applying: Acting Out, Calculating, Using.

    • Analyzing: Breaking Down, Correlating, Comparing.

    • Evaluating: Judging, Assessing, Appraising.

    • Creating: Composing, Building, Developing.
