Cell Division

Cell Division

  • A process whereby cells reproduce themselves As body cells become damaged, diseased, or worn out, they are replaced by cell division

Two types of cell division

Reproductive cell division or meiosis is  Process that produces gametes- sperm and oocytes

Somatic cell division -Cell divides into two identical cells

Cell cycle

The sequence of changes that a cell undergoes from the time it forms until it duplicates its contents and divides into two cells

Two major periods

Interphase

When a cell is not dividing

 Cell replicates its DNA

 Mitotic phase

When a cell is dividing

Division of the nucleus and cytoplasm into 2 cells

During mitosis the duplicated chromosomes become exactly segregated, one set into each of two separate nuclei.

The mitotic process is divided into 4 stages:

  • Prophase

  • Metaphase

  • Anaphase

  • Telophase
