STORY TIME:

George Washington, a free-thinker for his time period, believed that neither the power should be specifically in the hands of the people or the government, but more equally together rather than separated. (Notably, Washington leaned more towards the Federalist’s side) These two parties were known as the Federalists and Anti-Federalists.

Federalists?

Federalists sought after the rights of the state to tax, related back to their concerns over regaining a status similar to that of the Articles of Confederation. The AOC not only represented a time period where the government could not tax the people, but of political instability.

So What? Importance:

As Commander during the Revolutionary War, George Washington was a first choice for many. Not only was he a favorite figure, but he also was born in Virginia, the largest state at the time. Washington would be the only president to officially take neither political stance.
