Light Spectra

  • When white light is passed through a glass prism → broken up into an array of colours → continuous spectrum

  • Bohr used a hydrogen discharge tube instead of white light

    • Hydrogen discharge tube: glass tube filled with hydrogen gas at low pressure through with an electric current is passed

  • Instead of a continuous spectrum he saw a series of narrow coloured lines → emission line spectrum

  • When light emitted by other elements were studied they also produces its own unique spectrum
