PPE Genesis

Adam:

The first created man. First seen in Genesis 2. He failed as a prophet, priest, and king by falling to sin. After sinning he is forced to exit the Garden. Father of Cain, Abel, Seth, and many more unnamed people. Lived 900 years.

Eve:

The first created women. Made from the rib of Adam. After sinning and leading her husband to sin, she is removed from the garden. Mother of Cain, Abel, Seth, and many more unnamed people. Lived to at least 800.

Cain:

Oldest son of Adam and Eve. Was a worker of the ground, farmer essentially. Didn’t bring the Lord proper offering, and became jealous of Abel who did. Kills Abel, (first murder), and lies to God about it. God curses him to never be able to easily work the ground again. Father to Enoch.

Abel:

Second son of Adam and Eve. Was a shepard. Offered his best as an offering to God, which God found acceptable. Was killed by his brother Cain.

Seth:

Final child mentioned of Adam and Eve. Noted to be made in Adam’s image. Seth means “has appointed”. Where the genealogy continues after Adam. Lived to be 912, father of Enosh.

Enoch:

Son of Jared. Father of Methuselah. Walked with God for 365 years until “he was not (found), for God took him.” (5:24)

Noah:

Son of Lamech. Father to Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Was called by God to build a large ark because of the corruption of the world. Calls 2 of each kind of each animal to the boat, male and female. Calls 7 pairs of all clean animals and 7 pairs of unclean animals as well. Noah and his family escape the flood via the Ark, and, after 1 year of living on the ark, they are able to leave. God makes a covenant with Noah, saying he will never destroy the world by flood again, and says that Noah needs to be fruitful and multiply. Drinks the fruit of the vine and gets drunk, and Ham (father of Canaan) saw his father’s nakedness.

Haran:

Son of Terah. Brother of Abram. Father of Lot. Died in Ur. Both a place and a person.

Abram/ Abraham:

Son of Terah. Husband to Sarai. Father to Isaac and Ishmael. Uncle of Lot, brother to Haran. Called out of his home country by the Lord. Blessed by Melchizedek. The Lord made a covenant with Abram, making him Abraham, saying that in his old age he will have a son and through him be the father of a multitude of nations. To fulfill Abraham’s part of the covenant, him and all of his household are circumcised. Abraham later in life, after having Isaac, is asked to sacrifice Isaac to the Lord. Right before Isaac is killed, the angel of the Lord stops Abraham and provides a ram in his place. Abraham married Keturah after Sarah died and lived to be 175 years old. With Keturah he had another 6 children. Gave all he owned to Isaac when he died.

Sarai/ Sarah:

Wife of Abram. Half sister to Abram (gross). Barren, couldn’t have children. Anytime she traveled with Abram he would say she was his sister but not mention that she was his wife. Treated Hagar horribly. When she was told she would become pregnant in her old age, she laughed at the Lord. Mother of Isaac. Died at 127 years old.

Lot:

Nephew of Abram, son of Haran. Travelled with Abram until both of them were too rich to live near each other and they had to separate. Was then caught in the middle of kings fighting over territory and Abram had to come save him. Later, he moves to Sodom, and lives there until its destruction. When he is asked to leave Sodom, he brings his wife and two daughters and is told not to look back. His wife looks back and is turned to salt. Both of his daughters then get pregnant by him. From these sons the Moabites and Ammonites come along.

Melchizedek:

King and priest of Salem. Name means “king of righteousness”. Gave bread and wine to Abram and his men after the battle with Chedorlaomer and blessed them in the name of God.

Hagar:

Slave/ servant of Sarah. Mother of Ishmael. Was told by Sarah to take Sarah’s place as the mother of Abraham’s child, and that's where Ishmael comes from. After giving birth, Sarah gets mad and jealous and kicks her out. First person to interact with the angel of the Lord. Finds favor in the eyes of the Lord.

Ishmael:

Son of Hagar and Abraham. Had 12 sons. Abraham clearly has favorites and it’s not him. Finds favor in the eyes of the Lord, and is told he is going to become a great nation as well. Grew up in the wilderness of Paran, and married a woman from Egypt. Lived to be 137.

Isaac:

Son of Sarah and Abraham. Married to Rebekah. Father to Esau and Jacob. Partial fulfillment of God’s covenant with Abraham. Clearly mom and dad’s favorite. Abraham tried to sacrifice him for the Lord, but the Lord provided a lamb instead. Prayed the Lord would give him children because Rebekah was barren. Rebekah had twins, Esau then Jacob. Isaac, like his father, had a favorite son in Esau. Accidentally gives Jacob the inheritance meant for the eldest son. Whoops. Died at 180 years old.

Keturah:

Second wife of Abraham. Mother to Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Probably a good wife, not great at naming kids. Abraham gave nothing to these sons because he already had a favorite, Isaac.

Rebekah:

Wife of Isaac. Mother of Jacob and Esau. Intentionally chosen by Abraham/Abraham’s servant to be Isaac’s wife. Was barren but yet again that didn’t stop the Lord. Abraham and his son sure have a type (barren women). Her favorite child was Jacob, and she helped Jacob trick Isaac.

Laban:

Brother of Rebekah, father of Rachel and Leah. I forgot how incesty Genesis is. Tricked Jacob into marrying Leah because he didn’t want his younger daughter married off first. Had a covenant with Jacob surrounding the idea of peace.

Jacob/ Israel:

Younger twin to Esau. Son of Rebekah and Isaac. Favorite son of Rebekah. Fathered the 12 tribes of Israel. Tricked Esau and Isaac, allowing him to gain the blessing of Isaac. Pissed both of them off. After wrestling with God he is renamed “Israel”, meaning “He Strives with God” (Genesis 32:28). Eventually reconciles with Esau. Moves to Egypt with the rest of the family later in life, but is brought back to his homeland to be buried at 147 years old.

Esau/ Edom:

Older twin to Jacob. Son of Rebekah and Isaac. Favorite son of Isaac. Father of the Edomites. Forgave his brother after being screwed out of his birthright and blessing.

Leah:

First wife of Jacob. Daughter of Laban. Older sister to Rachel. Very fertile, so obviously Jacob didn’t actually want to marry her. Mother of Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, and Dinah (only daughter). Was not loved by Jacob, but was blessed by God. Jesus will come from her lineage.

Rachel:

Second wife of Jacob. Daughter of Laban. Younger sister to Leah. Barren, which is perfect because that’s Jacob’s type much like his father and grandfather. Actually loved by Jacob. The Lord took pity on her, and she was the mother of Joseph and Benjamin. She died in childbirth when having Benjamin.

Bilhah:

Rachel’s maidservant. A pawn in the game of fertility chess that Rachel and Leah so loved to play. Mother of Dan and Naphtali. Her children were considered to be part of Rachel’s lineage (sorry Bilhah!). Reuben, son of Leah, also slept with her, which caused major family tension. He only did it to piss off Jacob, and it worked.

Zilpah:

Leah’s maidservant. A pawn in the game of fertility chess that Rachel and Leah so loved to play. Mother of Gad and Asher, but they are considered to be part of Leah’s lineage. She is a concubine to Jacob after Leah can no longer bear children.

Reuben:

First child of Jacob and Leah. Sometimes stupid sometimes smart. Slept with Bilhah and lost his inheritance (stupid), but helped Joseph escape being killed (smart). Tried to offer his sons as hostages for the protection of his brothers. Because of his rash decision making, the firstborn inheritance goes to Judah. Seems like the firstborn inheritance rarely goes to the firstborn in this family. Father to Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

Simeon:

Second son of Leah and Jacob. Worked with Levi to massacre the Shechemites in revenge for Dinah’s rape. Because of this violence, he also lost the inheritance which helped it go to Judah instead. Father to Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul.

Levi:

Third son of Leah and Jacob. Worked with Simeon to massacre the Shechemites in revenge for Dinah’s rape. His lineage became priests. Jacob cursed his violence and scattered his descendants. Father of Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Judah:

Fourth son of Leah and Jacob. Gets the firstborn inheritance, even though he wasn’t the firstborn. He was the reason Joseph was sold into slavery rather than killed (how much better is that, really?). Had three sons with Shua, named Er, Onan, and Shelah. Married Er to Tamar, but Er was killed by the Lord. Onan then refused to get Tamar pregnant after Judah instructed him to do so, and the Lord killed him too. Judah tells Tamar to wait until Shelah is old enough to marry Tamar. During this waiting period Shua dies, and in mourning, Judah thought that Tamar was a prostitute and slept with her (gross). He had two twin sons by Tamar, Perez and Zerah. Told his descendants will rule, which is true through Jesus and David.

Dan:

First son of Jacob and Bilhah together, fifth of Jacob overall. Counted as Rachel’s son. Jacob said he would be a judge and serpent like, not a good thing. Father of Hushim.

Naphtali:

Second son of Jacob and Bilhah, sixth of Jacob overall. Counted as Rachel’s son. Jacob called him a swift deer in his blessing. Father of Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shilem.

Gad:

First son of Jacob and Zilpah, seventh of Jacob overall. Counted as Leah’s son. Jacob told him he would be a warrior and triumph in battle. Father to Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.

Asher:

Jacob and Zilpah’s second son, eighth son of Jacob overall. Jacob said he would be blessed with rich food and royal delicacies. Father to Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah.

Issachar:

Jacob and Leah’s fifth son, born after Leah prayed for more children. Ninth son of Jacob overall. Jacob described him as a strong donkey who would work the land and serve others. Father to Tola, Puva, Job and Shimron.

Zebulun:

Sixth son of Leah and Jacob, Jacob’s tenth child. Jacob says he will be a seafarer who dwells near the sea. Father to Sered, Elon, and Jahleel.

Joseph:

First son of Rachel and Jacob, eleventh son of Jacob, and Jacob’s favorite child. Sold into slavery by brothers who were jealous because of their fathers favoritism and Joseph’s dreams. Slave in Potiphar’s household, great at his job until Potiphar’s wife hits on him. Goes to prison, interprets dreams of fellow prisoners, and that connection eventually (after 2 years) gets him out of prison. Interprets the dreams of the Pharaoh, so Pharaoh sets him in charge of all of the famine prep. Reconciled with his brothers, allowing them to be safe from famine in Egypt. Set up the setting for Exodus. Father to Manasseh and Ephraim. Lived to 110. Jacob said he would be a fruitful vine by a well, saying he would be productive and blessed despite hardships.

Benjamin:

Second son of Rachel and Jacob, Jacob’s final son. Rachel died in childbirth with Benjamin, and he was greatly loved by his father. Benjamin was taken to Egypt when Joseph revealed himself. Father to Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, Ard. Not good at naming kids tbh.

Potiphar:

An Egyptian official, captain of Pharaoh’s guard, was the slave owner of Joseph. His wife was not faithful. Put Joseph in prison because his wife couldn’t keep it in her pants.

Tamar:

Married Er, son of Judah, but Er was killed by the Lord. Onan then refused to get Tamar pregnant after Judah instructed him to do so, and the Lord killed him too. Judah tells Tamar to wait until Shelah is old enough to marry Tamar. During this waiting period Shua dies, and in mourning, Judah thought that Tamar was a prostitute and slept with her (gross). She had two twin sons by Judah, Perez and Zerah. Both are in the lineage of Jesus.

Canaan:

The land promised to Abraham and his descendants. This promise is furthered to both Isaac and Jacob. Seen as a prosperous, fertile (unlike their wives) land.

Moriah:

Where Abraham is instructed to sacrifice his favorite son Isaac. Abraham tried to obey, until God stepped in and provided. Abraham labelled this place as “The Lord will provide”

Egypt:

Abraham (then Abram) and Sarah (then Sarai) spend time here, and Abraham neglects to tell people Sarah is his wife. Don’t worry, he’ll do that again later too. Where Joseph is sent into slavery. Joseph rises to power here, and eventually moves the whole family out here. The coming setting of Exodus.

Ur of the Chaldees:

Abram’s homeland. Described as a prosperous city, and is well known for their culture and idol worship. Abram’s call to leave is the start to the coming covenant with Abraham.

Babylon/Babel:

The site of the tower Babel, the area later became known as the city of Babylon.

The Garden in Eden:

The garden in Eden, where Adam and Eve were placed. A lush, fertile garden, with the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Garden was located between the rivers of Pishon, Gihon, Tigris, and Euphrates.

Eden:

The land housing the garden. Represents innocence, beauty, and divine fellowship before the fall.

Goshen:

The fertile region in Egypt where Jacob and his family settled after the whole ordeal with Joseph in Egypt and the famine. Located in the northeastern part of Egypt, near the Nile Delta. Builds the setting for Exodus.

Haran:

Where Abram went after Ur before going to Canaan. Where Abram’s father, Terah died. Jacob escapes here, as it is where Rebekah was from. Laban lives here, Leah and Rachel are both from here.

Wilderness:

Hagar and Ishmael would escape to the wilderness whenever Sarah was in one of her moods. Jacob also spent time in the wilderness when escaping Esau.

Moab:

Came from Lot and his eldest daughter’s son. Located outside of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Jericho:

Listed as part of the Canaanite lands.

The Jordan River:

Only really noted when Abram and Lot split, Lot chose the side near Sodom and Gomorrah.

Sodom and Gomorrah:

The two cities are located in the plain of Jordan, near the dead sea. Lot settles in this land. Both are extremely corrupt, and feel the wrath of the Lord when judgement is brought upon them. Abraham tried to advocate for their deliverance, but there were not enough righteous people found there. Lot and his two daughters are the only ones to escape. Seen as a place of God's divine retribution.

Bethel:

Where Abram had built an altar to God when he entered the land of Canaan. This is the place where Jacob saw a ladder reaching to heaven. Jacob named this place Bethel, which means “House of God”. After escaping Laban, Jacob returns here and builds an altar honoring God.

Shechem:

The place where Abram built an altar to the Lord after being told to leave Ur, a promise of the land of Canaan to Abram’s descendants. Jacob buys land here from Hamor, and sets up an altar called “El-Elohe-Israel”, all of which happens after he reconciles with Esau. Dinah is raped here by a son of Hamor. Simeon and Levi came in revenge and killed the men here. Later, Jacob buries a bunch of idols here.

Hebron:

The burial spot for Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, and Leah. Sorry Rachel, feel left out I guess, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Esau all spent some time living here.

Beersheba:

Abraham and Abimelech, the Philistine king, make a covenant here. Abraham also planted a tree here. Isaac spent some time here, and here is where God renewed his covenant with Abraham through Isaac. Jacob and his sons stopped here, and once again the Lord reestablishes his covenant with Abraham through Jacob here.

Peniel:

The place where Jacob wrestled with God and was renamed Israel. Here Jacob’s hip gets messed up. Peniel means “Face of God” because Israel saw the face of God here.

Dothan:

This is an area of pasteurized flock that Jacob’s sons look over, here is where Joseph is sold into slavery.

Mount Ararat:

This is where Noah’s ark landed and where the covenant with Noah is established.
