Quantum Numbers

Quantum Numbers

  • Are used to describe atomic orbitals and to label the electrons that reside in them

  • Principal Quantum Number (n)

  • Secondary Quantum Number (l)

  • Magnetic Quantum Number (ml)

  • Spin Quantum Number

Principal Quantum Numbers (n)

  • Designates the main energy level where the electrons is probably located

Secondary Quantum Numbers (l)

  • Defines the type or orbital/subshell

  • 0,1,2,3

Magnetic Quantum Number (ml)

  • describes the possible orientation of an orbital in space

Spin Quantum Number

  • describes the spin/movement of electrons in the orbitals

Valence Electron

  • The number of electrons in the outermost energy shell can identify the number of electrons in the electron configuration with the highest energy level
