Events:
The Great Depression took place from 1929-1939, with bank failures, unemployment, poverty, etc.
Dust Bowl: from 1930-1940, there was an extreme drought, no rain, farmers weren’t producing.
First New Deal: FDR implemented the New Deal Programs to get America out of the Great Depression between 1933 and 1936.
Programs focused on banking and recovery.
Some programs tried to lower unemployment rates, some tried to fix things, etc.
These programs were moderately successful; however, what got the US out of this depression was WW2.
The Scottsboro case began in 1931 when 9 African American teenagers were accused of assaulting two white women on a train.
Election of FDR: beat Herbert Hoover, FDR won by a lot, with support for his New Deal Program ideas.
Repeal of Prohibition: The 18th Amendment prohibited alcohol, which was overturned by the 21st Amendment.
1934-1936 -Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law.
Established old age benefits and unemployment insurance.
The 2nd new Deal- focused on social and economic reforms.
National Labor Act- us labor law that guarantees the rights to employees and allows them to take strikes.
Work Progress Administration Act- provided employment relief during the great depression.
General textile of 1934- the largest strike in US history, workers demanded better wages and shorter hours. The strike was unsuccessful, but it led to some safety measures.
1937-39:
The Supreme Court ruled the National Labor Relations Act constitutional in April 1937.
The Hindenburg disaster, a catastrophic fire that consumed the German airship Hindenburg on May 6, 1937.
While attempting to land at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey, the airship burst into flames, resulting in 36 deaths.
The invasion of Poland by Germany in September 1939 marked the beginning of World War II in Europe. This event would eventually lead to the United States entering the war in 1941.
