Stages of clay:


  • Slip- when the clay is in its most workable state, being soft, moist, and pliable enough to be easily molded, shaped, and formed

  • Leatherhard-when the clay is in its most workable state, being soft, moist, and pliable enough to be easily molded, shaped, and formed

  • Bone Dry-The bonedry stage of clay signifies the point where the clay has lost all of its moisture and is as dry as it can get before being fired

  • Bisque the first firing of a clay piece in a kiln.

How to create a slab of clay 

 creating objects by rolling out clay into flat slabs, cutting shapes from them, and then joining the pieces together to form a desired shape. 

Define slipping and scoring of clay?

Slipping and scoring are essential techniques in pottery for joining clay pieces together securely. Slipping involves applying a liquid clay mixture (slip) to the scored surfaces of the pieces, acting as a binding agent, while scoring creates a rough, textured surface to enhance adhesion

What is the purpose of slipping/scoring clay? 

To prevent things you stick on clay from breaking in the kiln

Coloring Steps:  (in order)

  • Blocking- blocking where colors will go and getting the general shape

  • Texture- adding texture to the blocks of color

  • Details- adding final details


Actual Texture- the actual texture- you can feel it

Implied Texture- the illusion created by pens, watercolor, or other art supplies to look like you could touch it but its just white paper.

Invented Texture- artist creating their own texture by creating patterns, splotvhing colors, or rubbing.


Work light to dark with details last (exception white)
Contour Drawing- outline with no shading 

Proportion- describes size, scale, location of one object in comparison to another

Value- range of light to dark like highlights and shadows
