Types of maps

  • Physical maps: Show locations and names of natural features

  • Dot distribution maps: represent a range of different features.

  • Political maps: show the location and names of built features on the earth. This may include country borders, state and territory borders, cities, and towns.

  • Flow maps: Show movement

  • Choropleth maps: use different shades of the same colour. The darkest shades show the highest value. - Overlay maps: show how the earth's features may be related to each other. Need a base map and tracing paper

  • Topographic maps: show the shape of land by using contour lines.

  • Weather maps: show conditions in atmosphere

  • Thematic maps: show a particular theme or topic

Features that all maps have:

  • All of the maps show some form of data

  • They all have a key/legend

  • They are all taken or shown in plan view: Directly above

  • They all have direction shown in compass/orientation

  • They all have a scale e.g. 1cm = 1km

  • They all have a title

  • They all show where the information is from

  • Symbols to represent something

  • All show some sort of geographical feature

  • All have a border
