What are atoms?- The are the building blocks of matter

What are the 3 subatomic particles and their charge- Protons +, Neutrons=, Electrons-

How can we determine the # of protons in an atom- The atomic #

Atomic Number-  Is the amounts of protons in an atom, it’s the same as the number of electrons

Atomic Mass- Average mass of all the atoms of an element

What is an Ion- An ion is an atom of molecule with a charge positive or negative

What is a cation- Positively charged

What is a anion- Negatively charged

What is an isotope- Atoms of the same element with different number of neutrons

What is a group - The have 18 columns

What is a period- The rows are a period, there are 7 periods

What are metals- All metals are solid at room temperature.

What are metals characteristics- Lustrous, magnetic, ductile

What are metalloids- All metalloids are solid at room temperature. Properties of metals and non-metals

What are metalloids properties- Metallic, brittle

What are nonmetals- Gases at room temperature

What are nonmetals properties- Not ductile, malleable, or magnetic

What are valence electrons- Electrons on the outermost shell that will bond with other atoms (highest energy)

How do you know how many valence electrons an atom has- By their group #

What is the octet rule- Atoms like to have 8 valence electrons

Why do chemical families share similar properties

Why are noble gasses inert- They have 8 valence electrons which makes them stable

Ionic bond definition- the result of attraction between ions.

Covalent bond- An atom shares one or more pairs of electrons with another atom and forms a bond

Nonpolar covalent bond definition- Electrons are equally shared between two atoms

Polar covalent bond definition- electrons are unequally shared between two atoms

Metallic bond definition- A force that holds atoms together in a metallic substance

Hydrogen bond definition- Intermolecular force, bonds water together

Molecule-  Formed when two or more atoms are joined together chemically

Compound- formed when two atoms of two or more different elements join together chemically

Chemical Bond- The force of attraction that holds to or more atoms together

Metal-Metal-Metallic

Metal-nonmetal-Ionic

Nonmetal- nonmetal-Covalent

Noble gasses- Non metal elements that are not reactive

Lanthanide- soft metal

Actinides- radioactive metals
