Schools of Thought

Psychoanalysis

Unconcious thinking / thoughts / feelings

  • Stem from childhood trauma

Psychoanalysis was "founded" by Sigmund Freud, an Austrian neurologist, who developed a groundbreaking theory of the human mind and pioneered the use of talk therapy to explore unconscious thoughts and emotions.

Behaviorism

Driven by rewards and punishments where people and animals learn behaviors from watching others

John B. Watson and B.F. Skinner were important in the development of behaviorism. Watson focused on observable behavior and did the "Little Albert" experiment. Skinner expanded on Watson's ideas with operant conditioning and his "Skinner box." They both believed behavior could be understood through conditioning and environmental factors. Their work made behaviorism a dominant approach in psychology.

Biological

Physically / medically / genetically

that might be causing nehaviors

The biological approach is a perspective in psychology that emphasizes the influence of genetics, brain structure, and physiological processes on human behavior and mental processes. It seeks to understand behavior by studying the biological factors that contribute to it.

Humanism

Humanism in psychology is a perspective that emphasizes the importance of individual growth, self-actualization, and personal experiences in understanding human behavior and mental processes.

Abraham Maslow was an American psychologist known for his theory of human motivation and the hierarchy of needs.

General psych notes

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes

Why is it a science? It’s a science because it uses the scientific method

What is behavior? Anything that can be seen and measured.

  • Through both animals and humans

Thinking → feelings → behavior

Basic research asks “Why is this important?”

Applied research asks “How can I use this?”

Basic research

Applied research

Basic research is a type of scientific investigation that aims to expand knowledge and understanding of fundamental principles and concepts. It focuses on exploring the underlying mechanisms and theories without any immediate practical application. The main goal of basic research is to enhance our understanding of the natural world, uncover new phenomena, and contribute to the development of scientific theories. It often serves as the foundation for applied research and technological advancements.

Applied research refers to the systematic study and investigation conducted to solve practical problems or address specific issues in various fields. It aims to apply existing knowledge and theories to real-world situations, with the goal of developing practical solutions, improving processes, or enhancing products. Unlike basic research, which focuses on expanding knowledge and understanding, applied research focuses on the direct application of knowledge to solve practical problems. It often involves collaboration between researchers and industry professionals to ensure the relevance and applicability of the findings.

Women are outnumbering men in the field of psych which is not good for boys because they aren’t likely to be as comfortable with women as they can’t relate and maybe outright uncomfortable
