Communist change
•private farmland went to the government and people were forced to move to communes, working collectively on farms
•wanted to increase food production and have more workers for factories
The great leap forward (1958-1966)
    • wished to create the perfect society (egalitarian utopia)
4 principles
•All-Around Development- equal emphasis given to industry AND agriculture
•Mass Mobilization - with a population of the size, better motivation = harder work = less unemployment
•Political Unanimity and Zeal- Party workers would run the government, not bureaucrats. They would inspire the party to work as hard as they could.
•Decentralization - Stronger governments on the local level with less government control. The people can do it!
Great leap forward fail- new plan
•over 700,000 farms would be combined into 26,000 communes
    • drought, flood, and peasant revolts contribute to the failing- leading to 15 million death by starvation
Cultural Revolution
•Mao distributed the Little Red Book, considered to be the most important source of all knowledge
    • Red guards - students who supported Mao and were to deal with The 4 olds (ideas, culture, customs, and habits) Destroyed temples, books, music, and painted over any signs not up to date, people who rebelled were publically humiliated and tortured sometimes fatally.
