Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl game day is almost here.

Mount Union and North Central will square off for the NCAA Division III football national championship Sunday at Houston's Shell Energy Stadium. Kickoff time on ESPN is 8:03 p.m.

Here are eight things to know about this year's Stagg Bowl.

Mount Union looks to end Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl title drought

Mount Union owns an NCAA-record 13 national championships, but the Purple Raiders have not won a Stagg Bowl since 2017. They lost to Mary Hardin-Baylor at the 2018 Stagg Bowl and to North Central in the 2022 title game.

North Central's Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl run continues

The Cardinals are appearing in the Stagg Bowl for the fifth straight season. Their run does not include the canceled 2020 COVID season.

North Central beat Wisconsin-Whitewater in the 2019 Stagg Bowl and Mount Union in the 2022 championship game. The Cardinals lost to Cortland last year.

How did Mount Union reach the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl?

After receiving a first-round bye in the playoffs, the Purple Raiders beat John Carroll 42-7, Carnegie Mellon 24-19, Salisbury 38-17 and Johns Hopkins 45-37.

How did North Central reach the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl?

North Central also received a first-round bye. The Cardinals beat Whitworth 42-17, Hope 41-21, Springfield 27-3 and Susquehanna 66-0.

Tyler Echeverry, RB, sr.

Has rushed for a career-best 1,631 yards and a Division III-leading 29 touchdowns.

Average of 7.3 yards per carry is within reach of school record of 7.72 yards set by B.J. Mitchell in 2014.

Named All-American by the American Football Coaches Association and Associated Press.

Selected Ohio Athletic Conference Co-Bob Packard Offensive Back of the Year.

Rossy Moore, DE, sr.

Leads the Purple Raiders with 20.5 tackles for loss and a career-high 106 total tackles. Ranks second on the team in sacks with 11.5

Needs just two tackles for loss to break the Mount Union career record of 67.5 held by Tom Lally.

Had a career-best 13 tackles in the Purple Raiders' quarterfinal win at Salisbury.

Named All-American by the American Football Coaches Association and Associated Press.

Finalist for the Cliff Harris Award which recognizes the best defensive players at the NCAA Division II and III and NAIA levels.

North Central quarterback Luke Lehnen helped vault the Cardinals to the NCAA Division III national title in 2022.

Leads Division III in active career passing efficiency with a rating of 211.75.

Has thrown for 2,960 yards and 39 TDs and rushed for 924 yards and 14 TDs this season.

John Sullivan, DT, jr.

Anchors a North Central unit that ranks second in Division III in scoring defense, allowing 10.9 points per game.

Leads the Cardinals in sacks with six and tackles for loss with 15.5.

Geoff Dartt seeks first Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl win as Mount Union head coach

Mount Union's head coach Geoff Dartt owns multiple national championship rings as a player and assistant coach. This year he hopes to win his first Stagg Bowl as a head coach.

Dartt was part of Mount Union's Stagg Bowl-winning teams in 2002, 2005 and 2006 as an offensive lineman. He won national titles in 2012 and 2015 as a Purple Raiders assistant.

Brad Spencer nearly perfect as North Central head coach

North Central head coach Brad Spencer carries a 43-1 record into Sunday's game.

Spencer led the Cardinals to a win over Mount Union in the 2022 Stagg Bowl. His only loss came against Cortland in last year's championship game.
