Colonist Issues
End of Salutary Neglect because they were in war debt from the French-Indian war. Made a border so the
First tax, sugar act not British sugar, foreign sugar.
NYC act Stamp act drafted declaration of grievances.
Some colonists opposed separating because they wanted protection. Natives and French & Spanish.
No taxation without representation, wanted to be represented by the British parliament.
Parliament = British gov
Stamp Act repealed 1766. Colonists saw this as a big win.
Declaratory Act - 1766. Can pass any act when they want to, British can impose any declaration because they are the mother country.
Townshend Acts 1767, tax on tea, lead, glass, and paper.
Daughters of Liberty 1777 repealed the Townshend Act. They were effective because they were boycotted.
Townshend Acts repealed 1770
Tea tax caused the Boston tea party 1773.
The British are bringing in troops because the tax collectors were being targeted.
Troop presence = angry colonists.
March 5, 1770 - Boston Massacre - Riot
5 people died
News spread of the Boston Massacre.
They can’t read which is why it was spread through pictures.
Boston - Massachusetts, were Puritan.
Massachusetts - puritans all 3 answers eliminated.
Butcher Hall - Represents how there was a murder.
Made of stone, rich and poor represented.
Poor house was made of wood.
Poor defensive colonists were still loyal to the British even after this massacre.
Free black person killed wasn't shown in the photo because they needed this to spread. Did not appeal to Southern Colonies if there was a black person.
Needed to be united to kill people like the British.
Colonists were hurting them. The painting was made by Colonists, not the British.

The ideas are still important to our country today because it discusses the fact they are equal and have inalienable rights. Showing the shift between.
No, Americans have not lived up to the ideas expressed in the Declaration of Independence because there is still racism seen today especially towards minority populations.

Articles of Confederation (1777) = 1st Constitution
Limited government. Since the King had too much power.
Central government = Federal government.
Articles did not have a federal government.
Settled everything through the congressional branch.
Congress - representatives of different states.
To make an amendment needed 13 states to all approve.
John Bowne arrested by Stuyvesant.
Religious differences made money differently.
Shay’s Rebellion.
Federal Government
Make payments to farmers who fought in the revolutionary war. Called duties.
Under the Articles of Confederation, the FD had no power to levy taxes.
Shay’s Rebellion in Massachusetts
High state taxes. States were allowed to tax, the Federal government was not allowed.
Rebel, takes 1 year to put down the rebellion. Needed money to fund soldiers therefore they took much money.
Treaty of Paris 1783 more territory from the British. Obtained the Ohio river valley from the British.
Northwest Ordinance.
Constitutional Convention
Founding fathers - George Washington, Ben Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison.
Wanted the central government to create a National Bank for funds and especially war bonds.

Didn’t want them to get too much power because that was too similar to the British.
September 1786 - Annapolis Convention.
Wanted to revise the AOC, decided it was impossible to revise and started a new constitution.
Constitutional Convention (1787) - new framework of government.
Focus on Legislative branch, congressional branch.
Virginia plan = big
Wanted a two house legislature. Bicomercial.
Population = representatives that you have.
N.J plan = small
Unicanveral house one house.
Representation.
Compromised with a 2 house system and electoral colleges, census every 10 years and ⅗ compromise.
House of representatives = population represented.
Senate = 2 representatives
Census taken every 10 years.
Important to have an accurate representation.
Left New York because NY had strict laws.
Electoral college. Every state has at least 3 votes.
Clinton won the popular vote but not the election.
So smaller states
1791, did not trust the population. Education was at a lower rate, the general population wasn’t as intelligent.
3/5th compromise.
For every 5 slaves it counted as 3 people.
Slave Trade Clause, no more slave trade into the United States.
Slavery abolished in 1864.
Reproduction was used to continue slavery. Slave breeders. Slavery is generational = status passed down.
1800-1862 was not fun.

No, the government did not have the right to dissolve their militia because they were only looking to protect their land.
Yes, it was a violation because they did not deserve to have their homes invaded and the reason they left was because they were persecuted by the British.
Yes, they did not have a warrant and her rights were violated. Ohio is in the South.

Whiskey Rebellion (1791-1794)
Credit Debt - Students loans, first car, etc.
Prove that you’re trustworthy.
Alexander Hamilton for the U.S.
Wants the Federal Gov, to go into debt.
Wanted to make it a Federal debt not a state debt.
Wanted to prove that the U.S is strong enough to have debt and pay it off.
Show reliability.
1791 Congress passes excise tax on whiskey.
Whiskey = a poor man's drink.
Wine = rich people.
Excise tax: Tax on everything
Sin Tax: Tax on luxury or harmful items.
Sin tax = harmful. Can tax double on the whiskey. Whiskey is bad for you.
Those most affected by this tax are the ones in Western Frontier, Appalachia.
Pennsylvania = Breadbasket colony.
Distilled from wheat, on the off season farmers would sell whisky (side hustle).
Sales drop with the tax and they rebel.
Western Pennsylvania rebelled.
George Washington, 13k men and shuts the rebellion down in 6 weeks. He was the commander in chief and the President. Compared to the 1 year of Shay’s rebellion.

Compare and contrast 3 rebellions:
Bacon’s Rebellion: Farmers wanted to get more land westward, cheaper, but the governor said no.
Shay Rebellion: Massachusetts farmers, taxes very high, were not paid for their efforts in the war.
Whiskey Rebellion: Pennsylvania, sold whiskey on off season, high tax, got angry.
The reasons why these 3 rebellions occurred were all varied, however, they were all due to problems with the government and had poor people involved. In Bacon’s rebellion, poor farmers rebelled against the fact the governor did not help them in obtaining more land westward. They thought it was unfair for them to not get help in fighting against the Natives. Shay’s Rebellion was due to Massachusetts farmers having high taxes that they could not afford and for not getting their pay for fighting in the war. The Whiskey Rebellion was due to farmers in Pennsylvania revolting against the double tax on whiskey, a side hustle they could not afford. To compare they are all farmers and did not agree with the high taxes, to contrast they all had different reasons for revolting.

Differences:
The time it took for it to end SR: 1 year, WR: 6 weeks
BR: Not allowed to expand, SR: Taxed too much and not paid WR: Tax on Whiskey.

Performance Objective: Students will evaluate Hamilton’s Financial Plan by debating ideas presented by Jefferson and Hamilton.
America - large debt after the Revolutionary war. Debt was held by the states. To make America seem more trustworthy and make more federal power.
Southern states opposed Alexander Hamilton’s financial plan because they did noy want to pay. They raised money faster and did not want federal debt.
Alexander’s Financial Plan:
Pay off the war debt
Raise government revenue
Create National Bank (BUS)
Earned revenue by taxing whiskey and proved that the government was getting stronger since the government put the taxes on. Unlike Bacon’s rebellion.
Tariff promotes goods.
Britain Apple - 1.00 - tariff - 1.50
U.S Apple - 1.20
U.S more favorable.
The Elastic Clause
The Necessary and Proper Clause. Change the Constitution based on time.

Last topic on the test.
Women had more of an expanded role.
Republican motherhood.
Before the revolutionary war, women helped with agriculture and home etc.
Daughters of Liberty, boycotted goods and made their own goods.
Produced to help in the war efforts, made uniforms etc.
After the Constitutional convention, roles back to patriarchy.
Women expected to have children lasted for 30 years, role to teach their children civil values.
Taught their kids values of democracy, the three branches of government, etc.
George Washington leaves after 8 years.

Poor farmers = Democratic republican.
