InTASC Standards for Educators

Learning and Learner Differences

  • Learner Development

    • Understands how development affects learning, which relates to cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical developments. The instructor modifies instructions to adapt to their student’s developmental stages.

  • Learner Differences

    • This is when a teacher adapts assignments, time limits, perspectives, and vocabulary to assist students who may not speak English or have different classroom needs. Overall, this teacher works with their students to reach their level.

  • Learning Environments

    • Environmental that supports individual and collaborative learning, and encourages positive social interaction including student-to-student and teacher-to-student. This teacher encourages self-motivation and expands on optimism for learning with technology.

Content and Content Application

  • Content Knowledge

    • Teachers understand the central, content concepts, tools and structure of the discipline. Uses multiple representations and examples and utilizes prior knowledge on the subject to help students build on what they know. It’s knowing the content.

    Application of Content

    • Understand the content and how to connect it to different perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. Use the appropriate teaching strategies to teach the subject you are teaching.

Instructional Practices

  • Assessment

    • Measures student growth as a class and individually. Accommodates learning needs. Typically in two ways- formative (homework) to help them learn and Summative which is testing to help measure growth.

      • Formative = “Forming the learning.”

      • Summative = “Summing the learning”

  • Planning for Instruction

    • Make lesson plans that meet the needs of all students, as well as meet with specialists to help meet your students. Having a pre-planned track of how to measure students learning, and working with the goals of each student.

    • UDL- Universal Design for Learning

  • Instructional Strategies

    • Adaptation to students, analyzing each student’s needs, and playing different roles to students. They challenge their students and change methods for on-going growth. They work with colleagues to come up with fun new teaching methods and switch up groups for unique perspectives

    • Technology integration

Professional Responsibility

  • Professional Learning and Ethical Practice

    • Active Engagement with students and the teacher knows the responsibility and effects of their role. They should advocate for ethical behavior and be willing to improve and continue their education. They support growth.

    • PLN- Professional Learning Network, This includes social media, conferences, magazines, TED talks, colleges, and other professionals in the field.

  • Leadership and Collaboration

    • Are we taking the lead and charging for our students? We work with families, colleges, and chair in committees to help our students meet their needs. Advocate for our profession… being a teacher doesn’t end in the classroom.

  • Be specific and Explicit

  • Read it out loud

  • Connections

    • Make connections to the InTASC standards, or materials we are talking about in class.

    • Also, connect to personal experiences

  • Make sure to hit ALL points of the prompt/assignment

Lesson Planning

  • Uses main Objectives and builds on prior knowledge for their students, since most content builds upwards.

  • Setting up your students for the material you would like them to learn with bell-ringers.
