concentration

concentration:

@@concentration@@: the measure of solute dissolved in a given solution

@@dilute@@: a solution that has less solute dissolved in it compared to another

@@concentrated@@: a solution that has more solute dissolved in it compared to another

other ways to think of these: dilute means a lot of solvent and less solute, concentrated means a lot of solute and less solvent

measuring concentration:

problem: how do you compare two very different sized solutions easily?

5g of salt in your soup vs. 5 billion g of salt in a lake, which is saltier?

concentration is mainly measured using molarity (M)

this is calculated by taking the number of moles of solute and dividing it by the number of liters of solvent

@@M = (moles of solute)/(liters of solvent)@@

ppm: an alternative way to measure something is to use ppm or parts per million

- this measures the dissolved substance as a percentage of mass

@@ppm = [(grams of solute) x 1,000,000] / grams of solvent@@

usually used for very small quantities
