Definitions

  • Other Potentially Infectious Materials (OPIM) - This term encompasses several types of human body fluids and tissues that may pose a risk of infection. The specific definitions include:

    1. Human Body Fluids:

    • Semen

    • Vaginal secretions

    • Cerebrospinal fluid

    • Synovial fluid

    • Pleural fluid

    • Pericardial fluid

    • Peritoneal fluid

    • Amniotic fluid

    • Saliva in dental procedures

    • Any body fluid visibly contaminated with blood

    • All body fluids in circumstances where differentiation between body fluids is challenging or impossible

    1. Unfixed Tissues or Organs:

    • Any tissue or organ from a human (living or dead), excluding intact skin.

    1. HIV and HBV Contaminated Materials:

    • Cultures containing HIV or HBV, including cell or tissue cultures, organ cultures, and any solutions that have been in contact with these pathogens.

    • Blood, organs, or other tissues from animals experimentally infected with HIV or HBV.
