Breaking down term “Personality”

  • What would be difference between “state” and “trait”?

    • State: is the quality of a person’s experience; typically temporary or chronic, i.e. is a disorder— when you are affected by something, disorder is

    • Trait: Who you are, defining characteristic of yourself

  • Personality is who you are.

    • personality disorder is an extension (exponential) of personality that is harmful in some way.

Hard to determine a personality disorder because…

  1. They are chronic

  2. Most people just accept that the behavior is just who they are.

High comorbidity with Personality disorders

  • Generally poor prognosis (is usually ego-syntonic)

    • Ego-syntonic: Your abnormal, disordered traits are misinterpreted by the individual as normal characteristics of their personality, is who they are

    • Ego-dystonic

  • “Kind” vs “

    • Should not be setting people into groups, but placing them on a scale; to what degree do they have something, etc

  • Prevalence affects about 10% of general population— however, this depends on how one DEFINES personality disorder.

Paranoid Personality Disorder (Cluster A) is often understudied in addition to being not well understood

  • associated with early childhood trauma or modeling

  • Need for control, constantly talking about conspiracy theories

  • perceived attacks

  • Need confirmation of their delusions
