  • morality is not contigent and dependent on other factors

  • for anything to be good, it should be done out of good will

  • good will is acting out of duty, in accordance to duty

    • u do smth out of mere compliance, u js choose to act in accordance

    • for kant, he finds it to have no moral value. have respect for the law

  • ex. moved by emotions from seeing typhoon news, if u starve urself for a week to save money to give to victims, kant says it has no moral value.

    • kant is big on rationality, not emotions.

      • ex. if our mom has a badheart and we receive bad news, under this imperative, we cannot lie abt it.

    1. Principle of Universalizability - An action is morally good if its maxim can be made universal or as a law for everyone without contradiction

    • maxim - a law created by a perosn for themselves

    • don’t universalize a maxim

    2. Principle of Respect for Persons

    • dont treat ppl as means (without consent)

  • prima facie duties - sa unang tingin

    • no need to think, it already is there
