Crime Survey of England and Wales is a victim-report survey that estimates the amount of crime in the UK
Police figures for crime recorded are also used to measure crime
Not all crime is recorded or reported - this is the 'dark figure of crime'
Comparisons:
Findings from the Telephone-operated Crime Survey for England and Wales (TCSEW) estimated that there were approximately 11.5 million offences
Total police-recorded crime decreased by 4% in England and Wales to approximately 5.8 million offences
Homicide:
Police recorded figures - homicide not measured by CSEW
Recent increases due to domestic terrorism and human trafficking incidents from 578 per year in 2016 to 717 in 2017 and 725 in 2020 - a reduction from a high of 1074 in March 2003
Include figures for Hillsborough where verdicts were trafficking cost, in 2017 and Essex human trafficking case in 2019
Violent Offences:
Crime Survey for England and Wales (TSEW) showed that there were 1.4 million violent offences in the last 12 months
Police recorded crime showed a 3% increase in violence against the person offences from 1,697,718 offences to 1,750,750 offences in the year ending June 2020.
Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence:
Estimates from the CSEW for the year ending March 2020 showed that 2.2% of adults had experienced sexual assault (including attempted offences) in the latest year
Significantly lower prevalence of domestic violence for the year ending March 2020 (6.1%), compared with the year ending March 2005 (8.9%).
Fraud:
Estimates from the Telephone-operated Crime Survey for England and Wales (TCSEW) showed that there were 4.3 million fraud offences in the year ending June 2020
4% increase in the total number of fraud offences referred to the NFIB in the year ending June 2020 (733,967 offences) compared with the previous year (703,097 offences)
Within plastic card frauds, there was a 58% increase in "remote banking" fraud (to 55,058 incidents).
