The Circulatory System

  • circulatory system- transports nutrients and other important resources

    • includes the cardiovascular + lymphatic system

    • brings nutrients and oxygen to cells; removes waste

    • also helps fight disease + infection

  • main structure is the heart

    • heart muscle contracts and relaxes constantly

    • blood moves from the heart, to the lungs, and back to the heart

    • blood moving through vessels allows for gas exchange and nutrients to all cells

The Cardiovascular System

  • cardiovascular system- pumps blood throughout the body

  • the path of blood flow:

    • 1) blood travels from the lungs throughout the body down to the left ventricle

    • 2) takes nutrients and oxygen to the cells of the body, where it picks up waste products

    • 3) the blood returns through the right atrium

    • 4) goes down to the right ventricle, and out to the lungs where gas is exchanged

  • we have a double loop system, a continuous pumping of blood

    • in loop 1, blood travels from the heart to the lungs and back again

    • in loop 2, oxygenated blood moves from the heart out to the body and deoxygenated blood is returned to the heart

  • red blood cells play a key role in transporting oxygen

    • pick up oxygen in the lungs to bring to cells

    • absorbs carbon dioxide in the body and brings it to the lungs

  • blood vessels- connects the heart to the body

    • 1) artery- carries blood away from the heart

    • 2) vein- carries blood back to the heart, and has thinner walls than arteries

    • 3) capillary- tiny; substances are exchanged between blood and vessels
