Lesson 9: Supporting Print Devices
Multifunction Devices (MFDs)
Perform printing, scanning, faxing.
Complex, used in enterprise settings, requiring proper installation.
Require correct OS and architecture-specific drivers.
Printer Languages: PCL (HP) and PostScript (Adobe).
Connectivity: USB (Type A for computer, Type B for printer), RJ45 (Ethernet), Bluetooth, 802.11 (Wi-Fi).
Printer Sharing: Through a connected computer or print server.
Print Job Options:
Duplex Printing: Prints both sides.
Orientation: Portrait vs Landscape.
Paper Source: Multiple trays, selectable in print dialog.
Print Quality: Adjust for draft or high-quality.
Security: PIN-required prints, logs for usage tracking.
Laser Printers
High-quality output, fast printing, ideal for offices.
Components: Imaging Drum (transfers toner), Fuser Assembly (affixes toner), Transfer Belt (for color printers), Pickup Roller (feeds paper), Separation Pad (prevents multiple pages).
Seven-Step Process: Processing, Charging, Exposing, Developing, Transferring, Fusing, Cleaning.
Maintenance: Replace toner, clean printer, calibrate after cartridge replacement.
Inkjet Printers
Common for home use, inexpensive, quiet, color output.
Challenges: Costly cartridges, ink fades, prone to clogging.
Cartridges: CMYK or integrated print heads.
Maintenance: Clean print heads (automatic/manual), replace cartridges, calibrate for color alignment, handle paper jams.
Thermal Printers
Use heat on coated paper to create output (no ink/toner).
Disadvantages: Paper fades with heat, not suitable for archiving.
Maintenance: Replace paper, clean heating element (IPA), avoid heat exposure for paper.
Impact Printers
Dot Matrix: Creates output by striking a ribbon against paper.
Cost Efficiency: Low page cost, great for multi-copy printing.
Noise Level: Loud operation.
Maintenance: Replace ribbon, printhead, ensure proper paper feed.
3D Printers
Types: Filament Printing (FDM), Stereolithography (SLA).
Applications: Rapid prototyping, specialized parts in space (e.g., ISS).
Print Bed: Needs to be level and clean, adhesive surfaces secure prints.
Troubleshooting Printers
Test Page: Use Windows settings to check printer functionality.
Output Issues:
Inkjet: Clean or replace print heads.
Laser: Inspect drum for damage.
Smudging: Check fuser assembly.
Paper Jams: Check for obstructions, functional rollers.
Print Queue: Clear corrupted jobs, restart print spooler.
Mechanical Issues: Check for jamming, grinding sounds, and ink cartridge installation.
