Untitled Flashcards Set

Micro SG Animal Bites to Chikungunya

What is a vector?

A bug such as a tick, flea, lice or mosquito

Name the diseases we covered that are spread by a vector and what vector they are associated with?

Lyme disease tick

HGA and HME tick

Bubonic plague flea

Cat scratch fever flea

Epidemic typhus lice

Endemic typhus flea

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever tick

Chikgunya mosquito

How does cytomegalovirus avoid the immune system and how does it lead to a owl eyed appearance?

It hides in WBC and reproduces slowly. I can move from one WBC to another and clumps together once inside. When two WBC’s with CMV are next to eachother it causes the Owl Eye appearance

Describe how the lymph nodes become swollen when someone has mononucleosis

It is due to T cells attacking B cells

Match the bacterial diseases we covered and what bacteria causes them

Animal bites Pasteurella multocida

Cat scratch fever Bartonella henselae

Rat bite fever Streptobacillary monilliformis

Sodoku Spirllum minus

Bubonic plague Yersenia pestis

Typhus Rickettsia

Lyme disease Borrelia burgdorferi

HME Ehrilichia enchafeensis

How deadly is cat scratch fever?

It is not very deadly

What causes Burkitt's lymphoma and what does it look like (remember the pictures I showed in class)

Epstein Barr virus but only after someone has had malaria

It is a tumor that can form in the mouth

What bacteria causes typhus and what does that bacteria do once it enters into the body, in other words, how does it cause symptoms

Rickettsia

It gets into the endothelial lining of blood vessels and multiplies. This causes the endothelial cells to increase in size blocking the blood vessel and eventually bursting

What diseases that we covered are caused by a bacteria and which ones are caused by viruses

Bacteria see #5

Viruses

Burkitts lymphoma

Mononucleosis

CMV

Chikungunya

What is the characteristic sign of Lyme’s disease

Bullseye rash

What are the symptoms of mononucleosis?

Under 4 years old…none

Adults: fever, sore throat, general weakness, malaise, swollen lymph nodes

Symptoms can last up to 6 months

What are the symptoms of each type of Typhus

Epidemic: High fever for longer than 2 weeks, stupor, petechiae

Endemic: same symptoms as Epidemic but milder

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever: macular rash (red spots less than 1 cm) on the soles and palms.

What are the symptoms of Chikungunya and how does someone get it?

People get it from a Tiger mosquito. Symptoms are severe pain in the joints, especially the wrists, ankles and fingers. There also may be massive blisters. Symptoms usually last about a week and goes away

Not very deadly

Describe how bubonic plague leads to an increase in the size of lymph nodes

The bacteria gets into the lymph nodes and continues to multiply. The B and T cells in the lymph node also start to multiply leading to an buboes

What diseases that we covered are the deadliest

Pneumonic or septic bubonic plague

Describe how people get cat scratch fever

A flea bites an infected cat, the bacteria gets into the flea. The flea poops it out onto the cat's skin which irritates the skin.

The cat scratches the area and it gets under the cat’s claws

The cat then scratches a person and the infected poop goes from under the cat’s claws into the person

What type of conditions can you find epidemic typhus

Crowded, unsanitary, such as in concentration camps, ships, jails

Describe what YOP does to prevent your body from fighting off bubonic plague

It prevents lysosomes from attaching to phagosomes (vesicles that contain an infectious bacteria) and also destroys actin from forming pseudopods which prevents phagocytosis

How does epidemic typhus cause death

It can kill in many different ways, for the test it is due to the high fever

How does someone get HME and HGA?

HGA from bites from the Ixodes scapularis tick (which also carries Lyme disease)

HME from bites from the Lone Star tick which lives on the White Tail Deer
