1. Corrugated (adj.)

Definition: (of material, surface, or structure) shaped into alternate ridges or grooves.

Sentence: Betsy felt sick after driving over a ridged and corrugated road for many hours. 

2. Penitent (adj.)

Definition: feeling or expressing humble or regretful pain or sorrow for sins or offenses.

             Sentence: Her ex-boyfriend was penitent after cheating on her. 

3. Insensate (adj.)

Definition: lacking physical sensation.

The man was insensate after he got hit in the head with a club

4. Perplexed (adj.)

Definition: completely puzzled or baffled.

Sentence: The students had a very perplexed look on their faces when they didn’t understand the instructions.

5. Stanchion (noun) 

Definition: an upright bar, post, or frame forming a support or barrier.

Sentence: He saved himself from falling by holding onto the upright stanchion.

6. Bailiff (noun)

Definition: an official in a court of law who keeps order, looks after prisoners, etc.

When the defendant began to walk towards the judge, the bailiff grabbed him and moved him back to his spot.

7. Feeble (adj.) 

Definition: lack of physical strength, especially as a result of age or illness.

Sentence: Jimmy Carter’s feeble attempt to raise himself out of bed had little effect, and he fell back down onto his pillow, exhausted. 

8. Skiff (noun)

Definition: a shallow, flat-bottomed open boat with sharp bow and square stern.

The two men travel down river in their skiff as they cast their fishing lines to the bank.

9. Divinity (noun)

Definition: The state of being divine or god-like.

The miracle the doctor performed was considered an act of divinity.

10. Pugnacious (adj.)

Definition: eager or quick to argue, quarrel, or fight.

Sentence: The pugnacious dog scared the children. 

11. Pinnacle (noun)

1.  The most successful point; the culmination.

2. William was at the pinnacle of his career.

12. Sodden (adj.)                                                        

Definition: to be saturated with liquid, and soaked through. 

• The fields were sodden after days of heavy rain.

13. Sharecroppers (noun) 

Definition: A tenant farmer who gives a part of each crop as rent.

            The sharecropper farmer paid the rent with his crops 

14. Varicolored (adj.) 

Definition: consisting of several different colors.

“The chameleon is known for its varicolored camouflage.”

15. Presiding (verb)

Definition: to be in a position of authority in a meeting or other gathering.

The judge presided over the trial, leading the court proceedings. 

16. Chasten (verb)

Definition: (of a rebuke or misfortune) have a restraining or moderating effect on.

Bill was not chastened enough by his 5 days of detention. 

17. Chambray (noun)

Definition: a linen-finished gingham cloth with a white weft and a colored warp, producing a mottled appearance.

The woman wore a chambray shirt.

18. Destitute (adj,)

Definition: without the basic necessities of life.

The former all star player was now destitute because his manager stole many of his earnings.

19. Tiddlywink (noun) 

Definition:a game in which small plastic counters are flicked into a central receptacle by being pressed on the edge with a larger counter.

One tiddlywink got stuck in our washing machine and the repairman had to come and fix it.
