Group Development

o   Forming Stage (the first stage of development)

§  Members being to think of themselves as a group, and the group’s purpose, structure, and leadership is tested

o   Storming Stage (second stage of development)

§  Intra-group conflict/debate until clear leadership and group direction emerge

o   Norming Stage (third stage of development)

§  Characterized by close relationships and cohesiveness

o   Performing Stage (fourth stage of development)

§  Group is fully functional, works on tasks, achieves goals

o   Adjourning Stage (final stage for temporary groups only)

§  Group members are concerned with wrapping up activities rather than task performance
