Dark Side Cycle

  1. Basic needs exist and are realized 

  2. Traumatic experience that threatens certain needs or leaves us with unmet needs creates a “missing block” 

  3. Existential Debt - the feeling that our unmet need is the result of personal failure, which creates an emotional debt that we attempt to pay often through unhealthy behaviors 

  4. Dark side development - the combined effects of these needs, traumatic experiences, and emotional debts result in the ongoing development of the dark side 

Dark Sides of Leadership 

  • Compulsive Leader

    • Rash decision making 

    • Likes control 

  • Narcissistic leader 

    • Seeking to have their agenda pushed 

    • Wants to achieve their personal goals over anything else 

  • Paranoid leader 

    • Paranoid leaders are suspicious of their subordinates

  • Codependent leader 

    • They lean on other people in an unhealthy way 

    • Fear of losing relationships results in bad decisions 

    • Starts in childhood, ends with lying and bad decisions 

  • Passive-aggressive leader

    • Pessimist 

    • Subordinates avoid this leader at all costs 

    • Disagreeable 

Steps to Redeeming the Dark Side 

  • Acknowledge your dark side 

  • Practice Spiritual composting 

  • Examine the past 

  • Resist the poison of expectations 

  • Practice progressive self-knowledge

  • Understand you identity in Christ 

Definition and Purpose of Margin 

  • Power - Load = Margin.

  • Margin is necessary so we don’t burn out

    • We are unable to “attack the day” when emotionally drained

    • We are unable to perform at a high level or grow when depleted physically

    • With no time, there is no ability to maintain relationships, or heal from any other area

    • Obviously, with no financial margin comes stress
